I think jigsawing is agreat way to get groups, and the class, to work together in a way that creates collaboration and unity.
Online instructors need to ensure that their students have good reading and writing skills, are engaged and participate in class and have good communication skills. Moreover, it is crucial to define the class expectation at the start of the class such as the defining what Plagiarism is by including the Institution Academic Honesty Policy in the syllabus.
I learned that effective communication is necessary for both students and instructor, especially in an online course. I would make sure I have several modes of communication available to allow the students to ask for and receive help, express their knowledge and respond to their peers.
Communication is critical to everyone involved. Guidelines for effective email communication were put forward, setting the stage on syllabi with some basic guidelines helps immensely. understanding that not all conversations can be done online, so providing the students with other forms of contact is critical.
Communication as in any relationship is essential. This doesn't change when becoming an instructor. Using good communication and maintaining that bridge open always is a good quality to have between student and instructor dynamic. It can make the class feel more comfortable and help them understand the material better.
The online community is a different paradigm in that we need to be in more attentive in our communication. Instructors need to be clear, professional, and appropriate. Adult learners have an advantage of bringing their past knowledge to the table and apply that to the online community. Facilitating this is takes more time than F2F. In my online classes through CTE, I have clear expectations about having everyone's camera on. F2F interaction as an instructor you feed of facial expressions, body language and tone of voice. but with online you just have the camera and some students do not want to be seen. This pushes contact further from the active learning flow. Once students know that they have to have the camera on then the facial expressions can still help teachers know if they are grasping the meat of the lesson. Feedback from the students can be a quick 1-2 word text blast from all students.
I learned many new things about participation and engagement. I am especially interested in using the Exit Slip technique for after synchronouse class meeting.
Get student participation by giving them understanding of why the content is important.
I gained more insight on this topic via this module.
Again, clear communication is a must for all involved.
Building a sense of community by reinforcing and modeling strong communication skills and building on prior knowledge is the prerequisite to creating a positive group learning environment in a virtual classroom. Students will learn best when they understand very clearly what is being communicated to them, and how they should respond. Being articulate and learning how to convey crucial messages in creative and interesting ways are vital skills for online instructors to cultivate.
It is important to keep working and giving feedback on reading and writing skills in order to progress students.
In today's classroom whether F2F or online all students should practice professional citizenship in my opinion, It is never appropriate to be disrespectful, demeaning, or humiliating to one another. The things that stood out to me in this lesson were that students should summarize what they have learned and the importance of timely feedback.
A clear outline of the expectations for online learning will help to provide each student with confidence as they complete the assigned tasks.
Now I know what Community of Practice is and why it is important to develop.
The importance of the Goal Is paramount, students should understand the objectives
Communication plays a key role in the on line classroom. Questions posed need to be relayed to the rest of the class along with responses. Also any other inputs from the class should be shared as a whole.
Creating an environment for everyone to feel comfortable and demonstrate mutual respect to peers.
Provide complete and accurate information and expectations. Encourage students to read all instructions and as the instructor, be available for questions for clarity.
Communication and comprehension are key.
