In this module I learned that I must interact with students in a respectful and professional manner, with the purpose of guaranteeing that they are immersed in the learning process.
Communicating with students about my credentials, my work history, and my hobbies will allow students to have respect and confidence in me. By knowing about me students may have an opening for discussions.
It is also important that I am present within the class and in class in office hours.
Relations are crucial in any teaching environment. "The one-on-one relationships that you have with your students, and the trust, respect, and consideration that you show towards them during every instructional session comprise the core of an energized classroom -- one geared toward promoting an enriched, meaningful, and dynamic learning experience."
I agree with all of my colleagues here. It is not new to me the importance of starting with sharing the credentials and experience, but I loved how this lesson emphasized its importance and also for the learners to share their experiences too
Its good to build a healthy relationship with your students and start calling them by their names, by choosing the positive words, even your tune.
"If you want to make minor changes in your life, work on your behavior. But if you want to make significant, quantum breakthroughs, work on your paradigms."-Stephen R. Covey
Establish one-on-one relationship with each student. Be available and responsive to students throughout the course; provide feedback to questions/inputs NLT 24 hours after students post them.
I have learned to write a bio about myself so that students can trust in my ability to instruct them and also relate to me as a person not just someone behind a program.
As an instructor, projecting presence is another way of encouraging engagement from the learners, which supports their success. It provides instructors with more teaching opportunities and students who feel supported are usually more motivated and perform better.
This module taught how important it is to create a relationship with your students. Share your nursing experience and question the class individually to obtain information about each student.
This module focused on engaging with students in a virtual environment. In order to do so, it is important to establish yourself as a subject matter expert through experience and education, to engage with the class in a supportive manner and provide continual, personalized communication.
Sharing a brief bio is an easy and effective way of providing a professional connection between learner and faculty. Having a brief bio submitted from the learner can also add key insights as to what may better motivate them.
Giving the students a brief introduction to yourself is a great way to share your experience, how you were once a student, and that throughout life we continue to learn. I encourage the students to open up a little about themselves as well to try to "get to know" them. I have also shared stories from my experiences that pertain to what we are learning. This gives them an idea of what they may see in their professional experience.
Short biography about the students and instructor are important step.
Monitor discussions but do not dominate them. I also can see where the bio of the students would be helpful.
What I have learned during this module is to understand the utilization of the classroom strategies that I have and adapt. The changes in design are necessary to influence and persuade my students into a better understanding and learning, utilizing effective listening and verbal cues. The e-learning environment can sometimes be daunting, but with grade levels of study understanding of the utilization of the system, a professor can use it to project a tremendous authoritative presence in the e-learning arena. Through that, a professor should be able to initiate, lead, monitor, and manage the synchronous environment and oversee team projects. Being mentally prepared can change the quality of the presentation and, therefore, the quality of the tension derived from the students.
I can further project my authority by providing video clips, audio, supported narratives, and tech, keeping head and shoulder photographs of myself professionally done. By providing biographies, students can include the name they prefer to be addressed in the communication chain. They can offer me their academic background, giving me a better understanding of where they're coming from and what they've learned. And the employment history, so I have a good deal of their experience before starting the class.
I have been teaching online for over 25 years. However, I learned in this module that it is a great idea to send a personal email to each student after class starts the end of Week 1. Write something interesting that you learned from their bio post and remind the student you are available.
It is important not only for the instructor but also for the students to get to know each other.
It seems that a biography introducing one's self establishes authority and a biography accompanied with a video or audio and head/shoulder photo also helps to establish a relationship where students feel they "know" about their instructor, about his or her education, experience and overall credentials as well as being able to put a name with a face - a student who feels he or she can put a name with an instructor's face feels more compelled to ask questions based upon the e-learning student/instructor asynchronous relationship. These together helps a student to succeed because the student will gain respect for the instructor while also feeling that he or she has a personal connection through the shared program or course.
Comment on Edric Leggett's post:
So true Edric. I have used a ten-question inventory in combination a short (5- 7-seven sentence) paragraph bio with good effect in my in-person and online teaching. Students seem happy to share, and I get to see their writing style and level without any pressure since these are for participation credit and not graded.
