In my situation (working in a prison) I often get students who do not speak English. If another student speaks their language, I allow them a translator in class. Otherwise, I "grade" them based on their attitude and involvement. It's about the best we can do being that the state does not provide materials in any language but English.

Great information on how to assist students that English is a second language. From the bare basics of learning the letters and corresponding sounds, to putting the word into a meaningful sentence and all that falls between.

In this section of the training, we discussed ELL students. One thing that I liked being pointed out was that although we need to meet learners at their level, we cannot reduce the content that we are supposed to be teaching. It is required so that they can be successful at either the next class or in their career. I also like how it pointed out that the way we might be teaching ELL students (like a breakdown of vocabulary), may benefit all students, such as those with lower levels in reading.

I have worked with an ELL in my classes. The student had great difficulty speaking english, thus not able to answer questions or share experiences, or even participate in the class during lectures and projects. Not the best solution, but that is all I had at the moment!

Learners come from a diverse set of backgrounds that involve everything from holding an advanced education prior to enrollment to having little to none. Regardless of the individual's background, it remains important to be able to provide students with an education that inspires, engages, and promotes the stated goals and objectives in their particular field. While students who have historically struggled in school or have come from a background where English is their second language, it is possible to still see student success by bringing your attention to the needs of the student through in class assessment, and then developing that student's learned ability.

Instructional supports are key for learners in which English is their second language. It is important to meet our students where they are at and help them be as successful as possible.
