This was a great reminder to be more intentional when writing or responding to an email. It can easily be taken out of context when sending a quick reply to someone that may be looking for a bit more depth.
I enjoyed the topic of writing a detailed and professional email and assisting the student with it.
Wow! A lot of information specific to good communication in this module! I particularly found helpful the point made that acknowledging a student's emotions and concerns communicates they are deserving of individualized attention. I tend to jump right in to the problem solving mode.
I really love the Response Sequence section. When properly followed, this type of response acknowledges an individual on several layers (presence, emotion, thought, and concern) and gives them a deeper sense of value (you matter!). In my experience, this type of communication allows the person to shift more quickly into a cooperative and constructive frame of mind, where you can then begin working towards solutions together. When this type of communication is absent, the individual tends to feel like they can't move to the next stage of problem solving because they are not seen.
Online communication can be misinterpreted and requires clear and concise messages.
I appreciate that this module included examples of good emails. The detailed examples were very helpful and gave me a clear template to follow. Since tone can be hard to read in emails, I often feel misunderstood, this helped me see why and how to improve.
En esta oportunidad pude conocer los diversos niveles de habilidades relacionales que debemos desempeñar desde la escritura, a razón de lograr un proceso de coaching desde la empatía, cercanía y fluidez comunicacional.
The response sequence information was very valuable. Having the guidelines is helpful for constructing emails/responses so the student feels connected and like they matter.
Distance coaching and the techniques were good to learn. I do find things like cohesive statements can make emails and communication longer and students' motivation to read the who thing is missed
I want to highlight the part from module " It is important to be thoughtful with language and use words with positive or neutral connotations to convey a supportive, nonjudgmental attitude, especially in the absence of nonverbal cues. " This is a top priority for CS advisors since our job is to build trust and communicate with students to help them achieve their goals.
I appreciate that this module provided examples of good emails. I find the detailed examples to be very informative, as well as they provide me with a template of an ideal response that I plan to use in future emails. Since email is difficult to read in the voice of the writer, I find I am misunderstood regularly and this has helped me see why.
Online coaching differs from in person because you lose the social cues such as nodding or smiling. When possible do video chats to make it more personal. In writing address the student and acknowledge their emotions and concerns. I had never thought of emotional bracketing before and I really like the idea to help convey what you are feeling.
Note to self [ Opps, better artculated]: Self-encouagement as I examine how my written communications will be understood by recipients. "Rewrite the message as many times as it take to convey to my reader a message that feels like I'm looking into the eyes, with my head tilted, and thus engaged in our written dialogue.
Establishing clear communications through emails will help students to explore more conversation with their Career Service Advisor in the office.
I thought this was a very important section as it reminded us how to add personal touches through online platforms. In order for us to be effective with our students, we need to communicate online the same way we would communicate in-person. This can be done by utilizing the ARCS model.
Very good module information and area of GREAT importance. It is most critical that career coaches both have a social presence and utilize it daily and effectively. Strategically considering readers perspective, tones. I enjoyed this module-great career services professional development tool(s).
The ability to create a positive personal interaction with the students is essential as a lot of the communication happens more online now. This helps create more connectedness.
A career coach must be active in engaging with distance students.
In managing a remote team, this information helps me add the little extra in my messaging to that exhibits a level of professionalism and thoughtfulness to bring my team closer together as we work toward common goals.
