It is important to have fun in the opening moments of class, as the best instructors always helped us relax and prep for learning. I would like to focus on this since I have a pattern of starting with a greeting then covering the objectives for the class.
HUMAN FACTOR, make an effort to build rapport with your students the moment they set foot in the classroom.
I would always remember the "horse" analogy.
Place yourself in the seats and minds of the students. Try to vizualize the way that they preceive you as an instructor. If you dont like the model that you are seeing, there is a good chance that the students will have the same feelings while in class.
after reading this material I reflected on my education. I had teachers that ran the gamut of the" monotone plodder" who made class a tortuous experience to the dynamic teacher who captivated students and made learning fun.
I plan on trying to be dynamic and adaptive. I undertand that each group of students may need a different approach to maximize their learning experience. I can not set my teaching method in stone.
Being involved, creative, and attentive to the different learning styles and needs of students can assist a instructor is laying a environment for active participation and knowledge development
By keeping a student engaged, you assist them in learning and participating at all levels they're capable of. Creating an environment of inclusivity.
Having fun in class is a key component to keeping your students engaged.
Greeting each student at the begining of class.
Treat students like they are attending college, not middle school. See them as grown adults but also still figure out ways to break the ice in a fun childlike but professional manner.
My daily goal is to create a fun, positive learning environment. I believe in providing students with positive verbal feedback when for participating in class discussions and activities.
I think the human factor is really important for student rentention, especially with some of these Zoom classes. It is important to show that you care about the students and the course curriculum.
It is important to ensure your students feel safe in the classroom.
Respect students by learning their names. Greet and acknowledge students. Make students active participants in learning. Meke learning fun!
Providing an encouraging and safe environment for learning is a top focus. Ensuring that each day brings added relatable classroom content and methods is what I will continue to strive for.
One of the best ways I have found to encourage student retention is to demonstrate a genuine desire to see them succeed in their academic endeavors and professional and personal lives. A second method is to ensure the course material is linked to real-world applications that interest them. In this way, the subject material remains relevant to the target audience, thus ensuring maximum participation and enthusiasm.
Cheers,
Chance
Even though they are adult learners, they enjoy fun antics and lighthearted banter to start the class.
Listening to adult learners share about their work experiences is a great method of getting all students in class to join in with participation in class group discussions.
Ensure that we are creating and providing a learning environment which is condusive to learning. Respect, creativity, fun, caring, enthusiasm, positivity, and showing interest in teaching all foster a positive learning environment. Students will be highly motivated which leads to more favorable learning outcomes.
I feel it is important to know when too much information has been provided to the students at one setting. Stopping and having the students reflect is a good way to allow them to talk about the information amoung themselves. It gives them some control as well.
Starting class each day with a good greeting and open discussion helps me to engage with the students and understand how they are felling that day. If I feel a student is having a bad day, I try to enlighten them by using positive things that have gone on in my day or in other student's day. It shows them that everyone has these bad days and it can be better by trying to focus on the positives that will go on in class.
