Creative Problem Solving Through Analytical Thinking | Origin: ED116

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Critical Thinking Processes and Applications --> Creative Problem Solving Through Analytical Thinking

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I read with interest the story about Dave Thomas and how he solved the problem with respect to Wendy's dwindling sales. As I attempt to apply that notion to my teaching, what I find tricky is taking student feedback about what could be done better to help their learning and how I could apply that feedback while being constrained by the curriculum.

Reflective thinking takes alot of patience.

I learned that creative problem solving and analytical thinking work hand in hand. Analytical thinking helps break down a problem into smaller parts to understand what’s really going on, while creative thinking helps generate new and practical solutions. Together, they encourage flexibility, innovation, and better decision-making. I plan to apply this by taking time to analyze challenges from multiple angles and staying open to creative approaches instead of relying only on traditional methods. This mindset helps find solutions that are both effective and adaptable in real-world situations.

Creative problem solving is the ability to develop innovative solutions to challenges, while analytical thinking involves carefully examining information, identifying patterns, and evaluating evidence. When combined, they allow an individual to approach problems systematically yet imaginatively.

Reflective thinking helps individuals stop and think about other possibilities, opinions and make better choices.

From this section, I learned about different types of intelligences. It was interesting to read about emotional intelligence vs IQ. I think the ability to problem solve is just as important as the knowledge that you learn in school. I also liked reading about reflection as it is something that we should do after every decision that we make, whether it is as a student or just as a person.

Creative problem-solving and analytical thinking are a very important skill for addressing challenges effectively. It is a process that takes divergent thining and convergent thinking and combines them together. It involves, defining a problem, information gathering, thinking of potential solutions, questioning alternatives, deciding on and using the most suitable solution, then evaluating the outcome.

From studying creative problem solving combined with analytical thinking, I’ve learned that the two processes complement each other. Analytical thinking helps break down complex problems into smaller parts, identify patterns, and evaluate possible solutions logically. Meanwhile, creative problem solving encourages thinking outside the box, generating novel ideas, and exploring unconventional approaches.

Together, they allow for a structured yet flexible approach to solving challenges — first understanding the problem deeply through analysis, then applying creativity to develop innovative and effective solutions.

I found this section on the different intelligences very interesting and informative. Recognizing each person's primary intelligences will go a far way in understanding how that person thinks and functions and will make working with them more rewarding and less stressful.

Problem solving is critical to patient care. Being able to gather information and correlate and implement a plan of care for patients is essential to the complex health care needs of the patients today.

The story about Dave Thomas (Wendy's) was good - and excellent example of reflective thinking.

Critical thinking requires original and productive thought and includes a need for adaptability, knowledge, capcity for reason and abstract thought, the ability to comprehend relationships and evaluate. You can see that critical thinking can be broken down into multiple skills.

Often forgotten about is the power of reflection. Taking the time to think (and to think outside of the box), be creative, ask the right questions, all help to grow problem solving skills.

It seems most of the problem-solving steps or procedures I've been exposed to over the years tended to be very methodical and failed to address the creative or reflective aspects of it. It seems much can be gained by just observing.

To become better teachers we must understand that students have different learning styles.  We can do more to help them take their 3 primary styles and show them how to weave them into problem-solving.  We must also touch on and teach about emotional intelligence and reflective thought.

Critical thinking is a process, it time to learn. components include having good judgement and reflective thinking. Often time in reflective thinking saves time later when things are observed and a change is made towards a positive change.

It is important to have common sense, to have listening skills, to value others and to have emotional intelligence. It is essential for the instructor to guide students to utilize their  thinking skills and emotions to understand situations and create solutions. After that, to evaluate their interventions and keep creating interventions until reaching the main goal.

Analytical thinking is a mechanism that students should grasp not just with testing, but throughout their educational pathway. More so for nursing students who will one day become a nurse and have patients lives in their hands. I plan to use analytical thinking when I am tutoring my students and getting them prepared before a test.

El pensamiento analítico debe caracterizarse por la posibilidad de decodificar paso a paso la información para realizar una apropiada toma de respuesta.
