I believe that competency-based learning is a great method. Having hands on experience helps to ingrain the theory-based teaching.

It is imperative for students to understand what is expected of them in order for them to be successful learners.

 

Compentancy are more than just the technical skills of students but how they respond to classwork and real world problems 

In this topic I've learned that students benefits from instructions in the labs and shop settings because it helps them to develop critical safety, technical; and troubleshooting skills by transforming abstract ideas into tangible understanding through practical experiences. By simulating real-world professional setting, this experimental learning increases student engagement, fosters cooperative problem-solving, and enhances confidence. 

Teaching in a lab or shop environment is especially relevant in a competency-based education model, because it emphasizes the demonstration of skills and knowledge through real-world application rather than passive learning. In these environments, students are not just absorbing information-they are actively practicing, refining, and proving their abilities in ways that directly align with industry expectations.

It was interesting to read the arguments against competency based learning. Some schools are moving away from it as other schools are moving toward it. It seems like some districts are treating it like a "flavor of the month".

I’ve learned that true competency requires more than just technical skill; it requires the Affective Domain. Students need to move from just following rules to internalizing professional values like safety and ethics as part of their identity.

How I intend to apply it: With my clinical students, I will focus on objectives like "learning from failure" and "sensory awareness." I’ll evaluate not just if a student can perform a task, but how they use clinical judgment and prioritize patient values under pressure.

from what i can see is how it flips the traditional classroom model on its head ,instead of worrying about seat time , finishing a chapter just because its Friday, the focus shifts entirely to weather the student actually get it its about mastery , not just showing up 

what sticks to me is the flexibility, love the idea that a student a concept can sometimes move on, while those who struggle get the extra time without falling behind , ridge schedule feels human   

Competency based education focuses more on the application vs the theory behind the application. Competencies can be hard to track because of the different degrees of proficiency involved in the specific skills. 

Competency based education can be defined as, education that addresses the level to which a student can demonstrate the knowledge, skills and problem solving capabilities.

Competency based education is more scalable with measurable outcomes. This is less theoretical with less employment of an abundance of theoretical information that sometimes create confusion. Competency based education is more than just hands on, but it builds character, skill and confidence in a more predictable way. 

Utilizing certain terminology and adjectives when giving students directions for the lab exercises can enhance their understanding of the "What and Why" of the lab task. I feel that although it is important to complete the physical task assignments, the weightier matter is gaining the understanding of the What, why and how is mor important.

A competency-based curriculum is important to find a balance between learning the competency and the development of the whole person. A skilled worker needs to have the ability to problem solve, critically think, and demonstrate interpersonal skills.

Using theories like Bloom's Taxonomy will help with providing proper teaching.

Competency-based education focuses on ensuring that students demonstrate mastery of specific skills before moving forward. In a lab or shop environment, this approach is especially valuable because it allows students to practice hands-on tasks until they can perform them safely and correctly.

For me, this is particular relevant as accidents can happen in the work environment; therefore, workers need to be able to think, assess,  and come up with a solution quickly as some situation can be life threatening. 

Most instructional theory and research is focused on the cognitive domain, but we know not everyone learns the same. More emphasis on metacognition will serve students who are sometimes marginalized in the classroom.

Once we can learn and access the class and their skill set, we can apply these techniques 

Utilizing Bloom's taxonomy can create a successful learning experience for students by using certain adjectives to obtain a certain response
