Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Howmany of our online instructors have used video introduction?

Do you learn by teaching others?

I cannot count how many times the light bulb has turned on in me by preparing for teaching my students.  I also have experienced directly in the middle of teaching a thought that has further established the content of what I am teaching and I am able to relay that to the students.  There are also times that students have asked questions that I needed to research the answer and therefore learning more myself.  Therefore, I can say without reservation, yes, I do learn by teaching others.

Discussions

My experience in initiating discussions surrounds open ended questioning with a component of research before one answers.  It must be substantiative and at least three full sentences with correct spelling and punctuation.

Keep the student engaged

Although adult learners have so many things going on in their lives, as instructors we must keep them engaged to ensure success in their journey.  Remember to keep discussions engaging, reaching out, and listening will always allow students the motivation to succeed.

Get to Know Your Student

It is very important to figure out which student's need the most attention to succesfully complete the course as early in the course as you can, usually after the first week's work is completed and graded.

Teaching online learners

I find when communicating with students via discussion posts, the instructor must have error free material.

teaching online learners

it is key to respond in a timely manner and to always be online as needed for the students

Management Schedule

Its very important  to professor online have a time management schedule beacuse  helps online  prioritize tasks, stay on task, and achieve set goals.

Taking responsibility for learning in a technology dependent world

Part of the online instructor's role is to teach students how to take responsibility for their own learning and outcomes.  With all the technological advances, students ask a question and an app answers it.  What is research?  Why do I need to read it if you can just tell me what to do or put a video on?  So, we as online instructors, need to facilitate and explain why the process is as important as the end product.  Thus, teaching students to go through the process, read instructions, read the content, and see the improvement or change at the end of the journey places the responsibility back on them, not just depending on the technology to do the work.

Engaging learners new to e-learning

What is the most appropriate way to engage learners that are used to the classroom setup and then suddenly, the class they are taking is a mix of on-line and classroom based

class members getting to know each other

I find that class members are so busy that they don't take much time to really get to know each other. What suggestions do you have for causing that to happen as an integral part of each course?

Greeting

I am just testing this part of the system. I hope everyone enjoys the class.

Course Introductions

Course Introductions are great! However, what do you think about calling each student directly and welcoming them to the course?

Best Practice

Students learn significantly from case studies or problem solving. It is a useful tool

Student retention

I have tried many time contacting students who ceased to particiapte in an online course in the middle of the session. The simply ignore and do not respond to my email sent via the online course email plateform. What can be done at teh campus level to make sure to contact those online students and motivate them to continue.

Students appreciate Constructive feedback

I cannot say how many times, I get an email from a student telling me thank you for beign specific. Sometimes we get busy and our feedback becomes a generic text back to the student. This just causes the student to lose interest in the online communication. It is hard enough to keep their attention. How has your feedback promote sucess?

Red Light/Green Light?

I really liked the idea of asking students for specific feedback:

What is one thing that you would like for the instructor to STOP doing?

What is one thing that you would like for the instructor to START doing?

What is one thing that you would like for the instructor to CONTINUE doing?

It may seem obvious that we want student feedback, but directly asking for it within the course is something I have never done.  I might think that I have the best teaching techniques in the world, but if it's not working for my students, then I need to re-evaluate and make a change.

Global Learning News Blog

Hi class, I have created a blog to share current events, updated articles, pictures of our travels, and comments related to Global Learning Initiatives.

www.globallearningnews.com

Please visit our blog and provide suggestions for improvement to use in our courses. Currently it is used in global management, international business, information systems and environmental science courses.

Thanks,

Excellent course

I hope that everyone gets as much as I got from this course. I will definitely implement the learnings from this course in my coureses.

Shared techniques

Success is dependent on ensuring that all systems are ready to go.  Faculty support and technological support are two key components that students will need in order to be successful in an online environment.
