NOT working from home.

I avoid working on any schoolwork at home. If I have to come in early or leave a bit late in order to get things done I'd rather do that. Once I leave the campus I'm done. Dosen't always work out that way but I try.

The carrot, the stick, and the adjusted viewpoint.

It is easy to take actions of our fellow human beings personally. We assign praise or blame accordingly. If we truely figure out what is important to us it is easier to plan our lives and not take the behaviours of human beings around us personally.

line between humor and innapropriateness

I have an amazing group of 25 students. I recognize and appreciate them all even the students who have a lot more behavior and personality to manage. I like to think that I have a good connection to my students due to my age and the manner in which I can relate to a lotof them. I also take pride in my libril sense of humor, I use comedy in my presentation regularly which has worked in my advantage until recently. I have a pair of students who have worked there way from audience to R or x rated commedians. I realize that my management skills or lack there of have allowed for this transition. I'm extremely new to instructing, I'm still working towards applying all the new info I'm recieving/absorbing. I will be utilizing various techniques from 104 to resolve and control the behaviors that are adversly affecting the learning environment. Any similar experiences or advise helps

Exercise Stress

I enjoy exercising to reduce stress, but find that sometimes SCHEDULING exercise creates stress because I feel I have so much to do. I usually feel better afterwards, but sometimes I avoid exercising because of pre-exercise stress. Any suggestions?

Stress and Boundaries

I loved the scientific definition of stress as a conflict between our goals and capabilities. It seems to me that knowing your boundaries (what you are capable of completing) is important to reducing your stress. Do you agree that knowing your boundaries and learning to say "no" can help reduce your stress?

How to motivate a student

Partner a weak student with a stronger student in a team or group approach.

Knowledge vs teaching experience

I remember in my college classes several instructors that were just tremendous in getting us to understand the material in the course while other instructors, although experienced in the subject matter, had trouble getting the information into our brains! Now that I'm the instructor, I try to learn from my students. If the entire class in having difficulty with a concept, I know I have to try a different approach. I'm continually polishing my skills and making the appropriate changes. If an individual student is having difficulty, I will work with them one-on-one and change my methods to suit that particular student.

Illiterate Student

How does an instructor deal with an illiterate student? Many times in the college environment adjunct instructors are hired teach adult learners; but sometimes illiterate students are in their classroom, and instructors do not know how to deal with this type of learner. Illiterate students are a special case, as many times college instructors are not equipped to teach this type of student because they have not had the training to teach this student. How does an instructor teach this type of challenging student?

Spending time with freind

I take 20 min.to take my dog for a walk before work.I leave my cell phone behind. This gives me pease to walk along the river by my house.and clear my mind.

Strategy for Mistakes

Humor can be a great rebound for mishaps. I've noticed that if you take ownership of your mistakes the students will value your honesty.

coping with stress

When I feel that I am getting stressed out, I drink tea and do things to relax outside of work. Take yoga classes, go to a steam room, do things that help me relax so that I can refresh before going back

Being liked or respected?

Respect goes a long way. I figure they are paying for education not for my friendship. Matter-of-fact, I believe that trying to establish friendships with students interferes with their learning.

Behavior in Students

Bad behavior is a indication of ignorance in the true definition of the word. The thing I have done in these cases has been to ask to speak with the student privately to gain insight about the true essence of who they are. I have been abl eto gather data that has allowed me to not only understand the student, but have learned to work with them.

Challenging Students

I have had enough examples of the same type of student that now I recognize the behavior of challenging students earlier on these days and I use my prior my experience. I must admit every so often I encounter a student whose challenges are a combination of many. I am learning through reflecting to redirect some of these students.

You have 20 minutes

I have always said that an instructor has 20 minutes to share all the requirements about a course's content. capturing a student's attention during these 20 minutes to relate important material is a life saver.

student(s) complain other student(s) are sheating

This type of situation has to be handled very carefully. I've had situations where one or more students have complained about another student cheating. Often times, this "cheating" student in not part of their casual group. As an instructor, you will have to observe this student more carefully during exams. I've also made general comments in class about cheating and the expected consequences. This makes the entire class aware. All the instructors at my school recently watched a video as part of our continual training about current methods of cheating. It is very amazing to what extent students will go to cheat. The instructor must be constantly observant for these new methods, especially in this electronic age. I will treat all students fairly unless I observe cheating firsthand. All instructors are made aware to observe a particular student

Being professional

I have the students define professionalism in their own words.

Cheating

Students are told dishonesty is not tolerated in their chosen profession.

Responsibility

It is good to explain to students that they are responsible for their educational experience.

Student handbook

A seperate student handbook helps to clarify expectations.
