Ice Breakers

What ice breaker activities have you used in class? and was it successful?

Learning Students Names

Takes effort and pratice but helps in developing an instructor student relationship.

Cheating Students

Eliminating/minimizing cheating is easier said and done. Students are becoming more proficient at cheating.

Using Guest Speaker as motivator.

Students want to identify with success. A successful guest speaker will create a buzz, act as an example and motivator for students to stay the course.

Late Assignments

Instructors at the first class meeting should be explicit regarding late assignments. This will save time and articulate your profesionalism.

Students who Bully other students

The scenarios addressed angry and insecure quiret students, but it did not directly address Students who Bully other students by intimidating them into handing over homework assignments, etc. In larger classrooms some of the quieter students wil not tell on a bully and the quieter student often sithdraws. Later onw e find out that a particular student was unkind. Question: How di instructors identify the bullies so they can be supressed and all can succeed?

Poor Hygiene

Occasionally a student will attend classes with multiple day body odor. Students can re-position themselves in a lecture class, but not in a lab or small group session. Our college is small. Once I spoke gently to a students to see if they were between apartments, and they were offended and dropped out of college. How does one handle grooming or should it be left to peer pressure?

Dealing with confrontational students

The student had bad attitude and challenged the instructor everyday. It was hard to be non biased. It was a challenge not to show dislike for the student or to treat differently from other students. The control that the instructor had to have was incredible. Talked softly and clearly but was firm. Set boundaries and stick with them.

respect vs. like an instructor

What is more important? Well,, to respect instructor is important but to like instructor is also important. I can respect an instructor if he or she shows students his or her knowledge or shares experience. However, it is sometimes hard to like the instructor as a human I know, hard to come closer to the instructor as general human relationship. I sometimes have lunch with my students, they like and respect me. So I cannot say which one is more important.

an impatient student

I have one student who is not patient in class. It takes time to get a certain result, but this student does not wait. Whenever he gets frustrated he leaves classroom and come back in an hour or leaves for the day. I do not know how to control his behavior(leaving classroom).

"fast" learners and "slow" learners

I am teaching computer software like photoshop or illustrator. Some students learn really fast by watching one time of demonstration but some students need to see again and again. I cannot keep staying at one demo to make them understand. I need to keep moving..sometimes I cannot finish shat I need to teach in class. What can I do..?

one more chance to turn in "late assignment" : late late assignment

I set a class policy including "late assignment" rule. I accept late assignment by the following class of assignment due with 10% deduction of point. But there are a few students who miss assignment often and just skip to turn in. I give them one more chance to submit the missing assignment by the last class of the term to get at least "pass grade". In this case, I talk to the students individually because I do not want my student to fail the class.

Students Doing Just Enough

One of the greatest frustrations for me as a teacher is to have an exceptionally insightful student who has demonstrated an ability to really shine in my class and then coming to the realization that they are only doing just enough to pass the class. What are some ways to address this learner and let them know that you realize their potential and to let them know that you konw they are not meeting it fully?

Young Instructor - Older Students

As an older (in age) instructor with many years in a private industry field, I have been asked by new instructors who are chronologically younger than their students, "How do I approach the classroom?" My advise is to have them always explain their field experience, successes, and their love of teaching. What are some other pieces of advise that can be given?

Student Involvement - Language Issues

What can an instructor do to involve students for whom English is a second language?

Ice Breaker Activities

I try to incorporate ice breaker activities into my first day lesson plan. Usually, I spend a lot of time introducing the class, the course objectives, grading criteria (i.e. the syllabus). Then, I do one or more ice breaker activities. I have many in my teaching bag of tricks, but I am always looking for new ideas. What are some of the ice breaker activities that you have effectively used? What makes an ice breaker activity worthwhile? Is the goal merely to get students to interact and establish classroom climate / rapport? Do activities have to be tied to the curriculum you teach to be effective? What are your thoughts / insights?

New Instructor

One of the best pieces of advice given to me before the first class I ever taught was; go in with confidence in the knowledge that I have and not to tell the students that it was my first class.

Cheating Students

I always explain my expectations to students regarding cheating. I let them know that it is unacceptable and if caught there will be a penalty. I also explain to them that the only person they are cheating is themselves and their future employer, because then they don't know if they have truly mastered the content and can be successful and productive in their chosen career.

Guest Speakers

I think having guest speakers come into the classroom is an excellent way to keep students motivated and interested in the course content. It allows students to ask questions and see the various paths their career can take once they are done with school.

Late Assignments

There are several factors that play a part in my decision as to whether I will accept late assignments from students; the reason it is late, if there is a pattern, and the type of assignment. Once I decide to accept a late assignment there is always a penalty associated with it. I think it is important for students to understand that classes are a foundation for their work ethics and that they need to build strong ones early on.
