This is a seriously fantastic book with tons of strategies. I have used multiple strategies with much success in my room, even when I thought, this will never work (I'm teaching adults and the book is geared toward K-12), many of them did work! I would encourage anyone with an interest in improving their teaching to pick up a copy! I got mine on my e-reader so I have it handy.

Instructors should always be prepared on their first day of class. Know their material and have the classroom ready to go. As student start coming in the classroom, instructors can make a personality assessment as the students enter the classroom. This has worked for me.

There is a distinct difference in the structure of an on ground class with that of an online class. The virtual setting has no walls, tables or chairs. Online, the structure is created by being on time and constantly delivering information that is related to the subject.

The best way to test is to include a varriety of questions, because everyone has there way of testing

Get students invoved by introducing subjects that pertain to real life. Also apply real life experience

It helps all the students interact with each other we all can learn from everybody, and it helps them for the real world.

Helping students with disabilities is important. A few months ago, I had a student who was great hands on (with his skills) however, he bomb test. I took a look at two of his test, and realized that the student did well up to question #20 and there after not well. I spoke to the student, He stated, Ms. A. I don't know what's wrong. I encouraged he to go and see a doctor. In the interim, I decided from that point on, I will have the student take the test in two increments. This idea worked well. The student score went from 45's to high 90's. He was grateful and later diagnosed with a learning disability. By breaking up the test into several increments aid the success of the students with disability. Good luck!!

Lately in my classroom, I have found a handful of students with reading deficiency and limited vocabulary. I help my students breakdown the words annunciation. Then we work on the prefixes, suffixes and context clues in the sentences. THen have them repeat the word and meaning to mean. They are also aware that the word may be on a pop quiz.

A modulars ago, I assigned group projects to students. Everyone worked well together except one group. There were two slackers. Ironically, these two slackers had the same issue with another instructor prior to coming to my class but yet, they chose to work together again. One the day when the project was due, I had each person from each group grade their fellow classmates. To my surprise, they were all fare. As for the slackers, first student did not come to school. that student received a zero. The second student, stayed in the LRC all class section to make up project. The second student not only was marked absent, also got 60% for the project. It was late, unorganized, errors and so forth. As a result, I decided to use this individual assessment form for group projects. It works well and the feedback is great.

It's extremely important to make eye contact with students. Especially, while relaying important information. However, with growing number of immigrants, culture diversity may hinder a response without eye contact from the recipient. The lack of eye contact should not be taken out of content or as a means of disrespect or dishonesty but, as a common culture practice. NAdams

What are some opinions on how to ask questions so that i could gauge how much the student has learned along with keeping other students engaged and continuing the topic of discussion?

I have found that in order to get the class involved I must put myself in thier shoes. Let them know that I was in thier exact position before. It lets them know I am human and not just some guy that likes to here himself speak..

I have told my students for years that most tests are simple true/false. We take ASE style tests and it doesn't matter if it is a multiple choice, Tech A, Tech B or a true false question. All of these can be answered like they are a True/False question. One question at a time, one answer at a time, one choice at a time ...Its all TREU or FALSE!!!

Being in a technical school I use the question the question technique on a daily basis. I feel that it is important to have the student come up with the right answer by guiding them with leading questions. Kind of a follow the leader excersise. When the student askes a question in the lab I answer by asking a simple question that has direct relavance to what was asked; and lead them to the right answer. One tip is that if they get stuck help them out to keep it moving along. A student feels pride when they realize they knew the answer, they just needed help bringing it to the surface.
