Student Learning Assessment

As teachers we must assess our students capabilities on many levels. I am a fairly new instructor at my school, however I feel like I have been teaching for years. Not in the professional sense as an instructor, but as the Chef of my restaurants over the past 12 years. We must interact with our students/employees to get a better sense of what level they are performing at, and to give positive feedback so they in turn perform accordingly.

Questioning as a Teaching Technique

To keep our students involved, using questioning as a teaching technique has always been a great tool. Not only does it help educate, it aids in keeping the class on their toes. I believe as long as you provide positive reinforcement, even to incorrect answers, it aids in showing compassion and less stress on the class, improving on the class attitude and class participation.

Teaching and Learning Styles

As teachers, I think we must keep our subjects interested. I teach at a culinary school, however the students have to learn more than just how to cook. They have chosen this path to become leaders in the kitchen, but sometimes forget they have to learn about other aspects of the business. For example, to make money in the restaurant you need to know basic algebra. I just try to put things in a different perspective, not x's or y's, more like "apples and oranges."

New Instructor

i am a new instructor. how do i earn the respect of my students.

Daily Debrief

At the end of each day perform a 10 minute debrief with the students. Ask how the day went, do they have any questions about the curriculum or objectives. Allow them the comfort zone to respond.

Learning to bond with your students

Listen to students when there talking

Special Ed students in college

When you have a student who was in special ed, and they are barely hitting the mark, yet this is their dream profession, should you keep encourage them to keep going and take their money, knowing they may never succeed in the business? I also feel I would be killing her dream. I could keep trying and tutoring her and encouraging her, but I don't think she can even pass state boards. Is this fair?

Students that dont seme to care to learn

How do you deal with students that you know can be something if they would only listen and learn what you are trying to teach them

What to do with problem student's

There seems to always be a student that thinks she can do whatever she wants, and has no respect for authority no matter what approach you take. She's been written up and suspended numerous times and that doesnt seem to deter her. Mind you, she is young. What would be some techniques to motivate her?

Virtual study group learning environments

I have found that offering a virtual study group environment helps the students learn and also bonds the class. I offer the option to the class after their first week of didactic and lab courses. I give them access to the virtual classroom and they set a meeting time. They can discuss difficult concepts, make sure they understood the assignments and talk amongst themselves without being in a "class room" environment.

Students with Learning Disabilities Are NOT Dumb!

As a certified teacher from Pennsylvania and a mother of a student who was diagnosed with an auditory memory learning disability. I can tell you from personal experience that many factors can be attributed to how well students perform in the classroom. It is the teacher primary objective to ensure that everyone student in the classroom has an equal chance to learn and achieve the lesson's learning objectives. By the way, I am so proud of my daughter because she is now a teacher and has overcome her own disabilities and is actually certified to teach learning disabled children!

Culture and Language Diversity

Students from different cultural backgrounds bring their customs and value systems into the classroom. From an instructor's viewpoint, all of the language variaatins and slang are important to consider especially when students are required to communicate in classroom participation and on essay types of assessment tools. All students should be heard as long as no one ethnic group is claiming superiority over another.

Learning Styles

Amazing how you can have those styles all rolled up in one class.

Student Accountability in Group Projects

I believe that when grouping students together it is crucial that you ensure that all students are assigned roles and contribute as equally as possible. Otherwise, the group dynamics will not allow for student engagement in the activity.

Owning Your Instructional Space

As a computer applications instructor, I find that it is necessary to roam about the room to not only ensure student comprehension of the computerized process, but to keep all students on the task at hand.

Students Working in Groups

I find when I teach Medical Coding to the Medical Assistant students I get a better response by working in a group. I usually have 5 to 8 students in a class. I will sit at the same table with all of the students. We will all work on the coding assignments together. It's interesting in the coding field how we come up with the same answers but found it in different ways. The students really get involved with the assignments. I usually give a new assignment and I would be coding it for the first time. The students find out how coders in the field look up codes.

Questioning as a learning technique

I do ask questions in my courses. But, I can see where I can improve on my methodology of questioning. I can see how asking the specific 3 characteristics of these three styles of questioning can tell me what is going on in terms of learning in my class. It can lead me to know what is going on with my students. Are they understanding are they not. It also allows students an opportunity to express their thoughts about the subject matter. I love that questioning is truly a Contribution... I like that... That makes sense and is so true. I learned some wonderful techniques such as: The open ended questionings and the closed question that drives home the point. WoW! pretty interesting. I am going to use some of these techniques my next set of classes.

Preparing to Teach

While reading through the Preparing to Teach section, I realized that although I followed most of those steps when originally planning my course, it will be beneficial for me to re-do them from time to time. This will make the material seem more fresh, and I will be on the look-out for better resources to aid with teaching.

interaction with students

I have not had many student that don't like to ask questions. I find a way to get all the students to want to be involved.

Learning styles

I would have not thought about the different learning styles til I stared teaching. My first maybe second week of the quarter I can tell what kind of learner my students are. So then I do my lesson planning around that. And it changes with every quarter and every class.
