Understanding learning styles

I try to observe how the students respond to different ways I give them the material in the course. This helps me to identify their learning styles and adjust as needed. Does this work for some of you guys, or do you do it this way?

Learning in a shop enviorment

Prior to getting hands on practice, we lecture , demo and discuss the tasks at hand. It is difficult to reach all students due to differant learning styles. I try to break items down to the pure basics and let those who need more input ask their questions. I can always tell who puts in the effort to learn a subject when we get to practice lab. I then target those who don't really understand the subject matter for one on one teaching/learning.

Learning Disability

Dealing with more than one student with learning disability, allowing them enough time is the most effective support system that helped them succeed. The first step is identifying which student has learning disability.

I thought I knew it all...I was damned wrong.....

After taking up this course, my whole perspective of know it all attitude changed. I learned and understood what active learning and teaching is all about....I am just excited to apply what I have laerned

Language Barrier

Language barrier affects those who speak English as a second language. That being said,it is crucial that Instructor assissts these students by breaking information down to the simplest form. Using example, providing visual description of what has been discussed will really boost their learning.

Lesson Plan, content, instructional goals, delivery methods. Perfect. Be well prepared, be someone that each student can connect with. Let them know, what they learn today is what they need in their futures...

Organizing students into a group

Organizing students into a group can be chanllenging. After trying to have student self-grouping, which did not turn out so good. I found random grouping to be very effective for the most part. When few students don't seem to be happy, I encourage them by connecting this to a real life exprience situations redirect them.

Eye Contact

I found making a direct eye contact with each and every student during lecture not only keeps students engaged, but also helps me find out what is going on in the classroom. For instance, I see those students who have a tendency to exihibit disruptive behavior duing eye contact.

Creating the Syllabus is something each instructor should do. By creating the syllabus, it give you the ability to understand what is in it, how to instruct by it, etc... The students appreciate how much we understand it.

new to teaching

My new position is to teach in a field that I have about 10 years experience in so I feel I know the subject matter fairly well but I can't stop being very nervous about the teaching aspect of it. My question is there any tricks to getting over my nervousness and building my confidence or is it just a matter of getting in there and getting experience. I just dont want to let anyone down mostly my students. Thanks for the help .

Understanding the Learning Culture of the Group

I find it very important to quickly learn the learning culture of the group. In my experience, our school is small enough that we have small classes and the students are usually in the same classes together. As I get to know them, it is easier to learn how they learn.

Transference of Learning

Do you see transference of learning occurying when you use active lessons that involve critical thinking especially in comparison to more lecture teacher centered lessons?

I find that giving students more Labs, more Supplemental Material, more Text Book Activities, that on top of what is on the curriculum, they will gain more! They will be better learners They will be better employees
