Difficult students

This question is for the group. How would you deal with a know it all student who ask questions that are so detailed you know they are trying to make you look like you don't know anything? That happened to me 2 semesters ago. I was asked questions every class that had no relevance to the course and when I limit the amount of questions he can ask because of time constraints, his friends in the class ganged up on me and they all started asked questions beyond the scope of the class.

Testing Selection

We have to careful when selecting a test. If it is a short test then we can give multiple choice test. We have to remember that some of the students guess the answer, for those students it is not a good choice to have multiple choice test or matching test.

Assessment

Assessment is an important tool.Problem solving gives student to read the problem first and then to think how to slve it means to think what methods are involved in the process.

Instructors Not On The Same Page With One Another

I have had students approach me with a question and then go to another instructor with the same question and get a totally different answer. Not sure how to handle this situation.

Thinking Activites

Students will retain more if they have an understanding of not only the method of application but also why the methods are applicable.

Reaching each one

Instructors are handed different tasks daily. I have learned some of the most valuable lessons about education from students with physical or learning disabilities. I find that learners that have different situations are more eager and motivated to learn.

Learning with slow leaners

Dealing with some concepts which most students get, but some dont. Any ideas?

Extreme Diverse Cultures

How to deal with Extreme Diverse Cultures?

Communication fundamentals

Can someone pinpoint some Communication fundamentals?

Multiple choice

I find that students prefer to take multiple choice tests and they are not very efficient in short answer. In the medical field there is alot of memorization so short answer tends to be quite cumbersome.

Formative method

I find that quizzes work best for me when I evaluate students. It gives me a guideline of what information I need to go over and gives me a gauge of what other teaching methods I may need to use.

The Shy Learner

I find that alot of students are extremely shy and reserved. I try to incorporate group activities to encourage participation as much as possible. Currently, I'm in an online environment, so discussions work very well.

Kinesthetic learners

I find I enjoy teaching kinesthetic learners. I am one as well so it was quite challenging for me to find creative ways to connect to auditory and visual learners. My classroom was always very interactive. Did anyone have this issue as well, initially, as an instructor?

Questioning Session

Questioning session is very important. When a student ask you a question means that that student is paying attention in the class. An instuctor us always a learner. He or she learns from qustion and answer session.

Learning Style

Students have their own learning styles. Some students learn by visual, Some by writing and doing prctice.

Moving and including.

Moving about the classroom and including each student from time to time engages the student and requires them to partisipate and communicate with the instructor and each other. Asking them if they have had a similar expierience and sharing it with the class keeps them engaged and interested.

Students and Multimedia presentations

I notice students often tune out during video portions of the class. There is almost a sense that "this is not my text book or instructor so I don't need to pay attention." At the same time, students ay they like to view multimedia content. What is the best way to encourage them to pay the same attention to it (i.e., taking notes) as other formats?

How to handle students who miss the first class?

First impressions matter and there are always a few students who make these during the second class! What is the best way to give these students who were absent the experience of the first class without disrupting the second session?

Can a syllabus include too much detail?

We often are encouraged to add more and more to our syllabi such as detailed summaries, assignment descriptions, etc. Isn't there a point where this becomes problematic and may even create anxiety for students? Doesn't it also limit the degree of surprise and anticipation they have for class? or may it even make them think about classes they could miss because they feel they already know about that or have done that before?

Instruction in the digital age

Many instructional styles we experienced as students and have adapted to our own classrooms were used before the advent of the internet, smart phones, and the "digital classroom." There are a number of studies indicating our students today have different expectations and needs when it comes to instruction. Within these arguments is a notion that lectures don't really "work' any more. How much should an instructor adapt their style to these new needs without minimizing content and learning objectives?
