How do I encourage a student who is unwilling to put forth more effort.

Teaching is new to me so I am really enjoying this learning module. I really like the idea of really being straight forward with the students and highlighting the main topics to be covered that day and using statements that really draw the students attention to the point you are going to make. I know that I had instructors who I felt did not seem to want us to succeed or help us in anyway to know what was important, and that sure was not the best learning environment. We want the students to learn and succeed so it sure it important to help them to know what is important.

I usually instroduce mysefl on the first day of the class and let all students know what subjects I'll cover for each day, and what I expect them to do. Ther's no stupid questions in my class. I want all students engage and ask the questions. If I feel the students getting tired. I'll change the subject and let they do a litte excercise and sometime even tell them a joke or story to make they laugh. All my students love my story, then we go back to subject.

most important part of a first impression is having everything ready the first time you meet the class.

looking for good ways to keep "ADD" students engaged and concentrating in class these type tend to bounce from 1 subject to another and forget about the rest of the class

I am a fairly new instructor in Anatomy and Physiology. I find the idea of Active Learning very interesting. I am concerned though that with such an "information heavy" course, that I will struggle with finding active learning ideas and still be able to teach the students all of the information that we need to cover in the course. Any suggestions?

sometimes you have to mix up your strong student with your weak student. so everybody is comfortable

I teach in a accelerated program and the content I now have to cover has doubled and the time in which to do it has not changed. They have a quiz every week,I do review before but many of the students are not getting it.

One of the highlights of demonstrating the latest in digital filmmaking technology, is bringing in vintage and still quite functional but antiquated film cameras that demonstrates how the latest cameras still owe a great deal to this older technology. Many of the younger students just cannot get their heads around that at one time in the far and away past (5-7 years) a camera operator had to thread a celluloid based strip of plastic through a heavy block of iron to capture images.

As a professional in the film industry and as somebody who relishes working with the camera, meeting that certain group of hungry new students for the 1st time is something I will always cherish. Two semesters ago-- the fall of 2012, I was greeted by 12 hungry wannabe filmmakers who were ready to take on the industry. This enthusiasm has not lead up and now we are together taking Camera 2. Some of these students have grown so much that they are already taking on their first professional jobs.

I like to have my syllabus and outline of course to be given to all students so they know what is expected of them

I always try and make my students feel comfortable that first day of class so they will always know they can talk to me and ask questions with out being afraid

I feel like i am always to tryingto keep my students interested in the topics i am teaching so they will stay eager to learn

As a first year instructor, I have been somewhat limited to using the existing syllabus for each of the classes I am teaching. This method somewhat limits what my world experience in the field has taught me and constrains the creative solutions that I have gained through on the job pressures and problems. Can anybody offer advice as a workaround to this dilemma?

One of my favorite groups of students, who will be working with me until they are seniors, are a large and very motivated bunch-- the LOVE filmmaking... but they are very "energetic." I have no desire to try and stifle this energy, in fact I want to encourage it. But classes can get very loud and disruptive. I need to get a grip on these students but still maintain that level of energy and passion.

We are required to give our theory lecture presentations through power point. Is it better to let the students take notes from the power point or to run off a copy of the power point and have them fill in notes on the lines next to each slide. Part of me feels that this would help them have a better study guide. However, when the have to take notes and just look at the slide, making them write down everything might make them retain the material better. I have mixed emotions about this and would like some guidance on these thoughts.

Personally I find that the first day is an exciting one. It's a chance to refresh and try a new approach to a class that maybe didn't work quite like you had planned the semester before. The first day always sets that tone and expectations.
