Hands on learning
As a math instructor, I have learned that most students like the hands on approach. I have each student work their individual problems and put it on the board. They feel proud when they get it right.

Hands on is a essential part of teaching math. The more application they can see and make the greater their engagement is going to be. Keep up the work you are doing with your hands on approach.

I also agree with you, it seems as if they pay more attention when they know they could be called on to work out something on the board also.

Knowing that they might be called upon keeps them engaged and focused for longer periods of time within the course.
