Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Interaction

Interaction is a critical component of learning. For example, an instructor who interacts with learners as part of the instructional strategy is going to be better at identifying how learning is going, and whether things need to be altered. Interaction is also an active approach which tends to encourage learners to think. While not all learning activities require interaction, certainly it's important in anything but the shortest sessions.

Classroom Planning

Careful planning and personal touches will make your classroom a home away from home for your students. If you make the classroom a place in which your students feel at ease, you will have a better opportunity to produce willing, active learners. I personally do the following; I determine a seating arrangement and make sure it is appropriate for the instruction or activities I have planned. I make sure desks are arranged so that all students can comfortably see whiteboard and overhead screen. Lastly, I do my best to create learning centers with fun activity.

Evaluation what are the rewards?

Student who have a low self esteem, a great evaluation can be a great boost, they feel that the hard work was for the right reason. Also evaluating students, shows you to what degree the student has learn. Evaluating gives the student what information they understand and where they need to improve.

Keeping the student involved.

One of the ways I keep my students involved is to plan my lectures into sections. The students are more inclined to remain engaged if the day is put into blocks of 1 hour sections. Each hour we do something different such as a lecture, then some hands on lab relating to the lecture, or break up into groups and give each group a timed challenge to see what they have learned. I also really helps to keep the students motivated.

Instructor personality

The instructor personality is the foundation of success for any course. With all the tools today at our disposal, the instructor is the one standing in front of the classroom instructing the students guiding what level of education they received The instructor must be authentic not ony to the students but to yourself also. Students know if an instructor is genuine. I'm a very outgoing and happy person naturally and I feel this is conveyed to my students and they feel at ease while in the classroom. I think this contributes to them feeling comfortable in asking questions and not being intimidated,

Organization speaks volumes!

"We’ve got one chance to make a good first impression". Organization leads to better prepared classes, students notice this,as instructors we are more thorough and creative because our thoughts are organized. When we're prepared it just adds to a more interesting class. The hurried, frazzled, hectic-pace teacher conveys less than a wonderful picture of competence and confidence. Students are paying attention to the instructors every move, so organization comveys competence. I make it a rule to always be 3-5 days ahead of schedule, organized and prepared for the future start of a class.

Extra Credit

I do not have the freedom of choice in the matter of extra credit as it has been outlined that we do not offer the option of extra credit per our school policy.

Utilizing Resources

I find that my students are more inclined to remain engaged if i break up the lessons in blocks of 1 hour. Each hour we do something different such as a lecture, then we might play a trivia game or break up into groups and give each group a timed challenge to see what they have learned. I also really helps to keep the students motivated.

Engaging Students in Lecture

When lecturing, I find that if I incorporate real life examples as well as props for example, if I am lecturing on the "Special Senses", I will bring in something sweet, salty, sour, etc and blindfold the students and actually have them use their senses so that they may experience it 1st hand which I find helps to not only engage the new learner but to have them retain the information as well.

Organization is "Key"

I have certain expectations of my students, such as arriving on time, remaining until the end of the class period, being organized, preparred and ready to learn something new every day. How can I expect this of them if I do not set the standard which is why I make it a rule within our department to always be 3-5 days ahead of schedule, organized and preparred for the future start of a class.

Why Evaluations are important

Student should be evaluated through out their learning experience. Evaluating gives the student a great idea where they are doing great and where they need to improve. And for those student who have a low self esteem, a great evaluation can be a great boost..

Importance of being prepared

Hitting back on the how important it is for an instructor to be prepared, to be flexable in all area's of teaching. Understand the different styles each student learns the best from, bringing all these aspects together and have great teaching strategies, spell success for students and instructor alike.

Crazy Teaching Methods

I have been an instructor for many years now but when I was new to teaching, I was shadowing another instructor who used the "crazy" teaching method and the students seemed to really enjoy the whole learning process and they were having a lot of fun in doing so. Over the years, I have developed several other methods of teaching but I find that students benefit most when I use the crazt teaching mathod.

Being prepared for classroom is key to the students success

I believe that students learn greatly by the example that is laid out by the Instructor. An Instructor who is ill prepared, is setting a horrible example for the student who already struggles with priorities and being prepared for everyday life issues.

Extra credit

The extra credit we offer on some exams just makes up for a question you might have missed. I would like to be able to offer something to the students that have to work harder than others but we have no policy for that. I just give them verbal praise for there progress. It seems to help but doesn't change there grade.

Back up plan

Back up plans are a must. But its easy to get off track if they dont relate to the subject. Just when you think you have seen every kind of learner there will be another style of person. I learn something new all the time.

Chalk Board

I am a overhead and chalk board teacher in the classrooms. I can see that I need to keep it cleaner now after going thru this last module... It made a lot of sense to me

Prepare

Having all the classroom content organized I think is a must. There are plenty of instructors that just dont understand that. They don't care for the classes or maybe they don't understand the content. But in the lab they are fine. Maybe they should spend a little more time before class getting ready. I think you should be there and ready well before your students. You are then ready to teach your class and they know that.

Creating an Evaluation System

It is important to specify your grading system in the syllabus and give the syllabus on the first day of your class. I think is better to create a grading system in percentage then point system. The students know their grade in percentage.Keep informing the students about their grades like after mid term.

Using Pretest

I agree pretest is a good tool to know where new students stand in the class. The instructor can work according with students.Status assessments are also important, this tells the progress of a student.
