Is your school socially neworked?

Does your school allow you to use social networking as a teaching tool in your classroom? I'm curious to find out how common it is in other institutions. Our school, at the advice of the corporation that owns it, has rules that bar instructors from sending or accepting friend requests from students on, say, FaceBook, citing it as a violation of the school's non-fraternization policy. LinkedIn, however, is allowed. How does it work at your school?

Knowing yourself

Engaging Students

I feel sometimes I have trouble keeping some of my students engaged during my lectures. I often use power point presentation to help me stay on track and also to give them a visual. I often expand on what is written on the slide but I often have students that try to write down everything that is on the slide and that I say. What can I do to keep my students engaged and help them to understand the purpose of a lecture.

Teaching Journal Structure Tips

Hello, I really like the idea of keeping a journal. It's potential value is obvious. And I truly need to improve the efficiency with which I implement lessons learned from class to class and semester to semester. But just as I am optimistic, I am concerned that without some guidance about how to structure the journal, it will inevitably be just another case of disorganized inefficiency. Do you have any favorite guidelines or tips on how to approach the actual mechanism of keeping a journal? Thanks in advance! Stephen

knowing all involved

Starting my new classes for the term, I often start by introducing myself along with my credentials and experience. I then ask everyone to introduce themselves and tell the class a little bit about themselves because it gives me a better idea of you is in my class. I also ask students to describe themselves using words, actions or verbal cues. By using this activity I can better undertand what learning types I am dealing with.

Grading rubrics

I like to use a grading rubric for assessments. This gives students a foundation to work from. They know how they will be graded and what to expect.

Vocabulary words

I like to have students make mini crossword puzzles and word searches of vocabulary words. Puzzles reinforce word definitions and word searches reinforce spelling. They enjoy the activities and seem to demonstrate better retention.

Various instructional methods

I like to use powerpoints accompanied with a lecture outline with lines for note-taking. After a few slides I might perform a quick check by giving a pop quiz on the main points. This keeps students focused when they know there will be an assessment during instruction.

Advance Preparation

At the end of each class, I like to go over the schedule for the upcoming class session/week with the students. This helps prepare the students ahead of time and clarifies any confusion. It also reinforces the syllabus and lets the students know that we are right on target with meeting the course expectations. It is also a time for me to start thinking about my instructional support needs for class preparation as well.

Powerpoint Presentations

I absolutely agreed. Power points presentations are a great media to delivery instructional content to the class. I use at the daily basis.

Setting a Grading System

This course shows an amazing way for a fair/consistent grading system. It is absolutely helpful, particularly when we have to set up extra-credit activities. Thank you very much for the invaluable input.
