Preparing Students to Become Good Online Learners --> Non-Technical Skills
Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.
I think it's interesting that this section was called 'non-technical skills', since I teach the English course online. Communication, time-management, motivation, and online citizenship are all concepts that I discuss throughout the course, but especially at the start of each term.
It's so important to make sure there are ways for every student to be able to get in touch with you/feel connected and heard. And as the instructor to be seen and heard even though you aren't F2F
Clear communication is very important when instructing students. We can guide them to communicate effectively and clearly.
It is important to encourage your student to communicate clearly with correct etiquette.
From this module on non-technical Skills, I learned that effective teaching -especially in an online learning environment relies heavily on skills such as communication, empathy, adaptability, time management, and collaboration. While technical knowledge is important, non- technical skills play a crucial role in students' engagement and success.
I intend to apply these skills by communicating clearly and consistently with my online students. I will practice active listening and empathy, which will help me better understand students' challenges, particularly those balancing school, work, and family responsibilities
I think understanding Cyber-plagiarism is important component of on-line teaching which includes obtaining ideas from the Internet and using them without proper referencing. It also includes students downloading research papers, journal articles, and other work from the Internet and simply submitting it as their original work.
Also, participating in an online class and engaging in the learning process is essential but can evolve into more of a Community of Practice (CoP).
Students need guidelines on how to communicate with the instructor and the classmates. Communication leads to more communication.
In this module I learned that communication should be effective, consistent and respectful.
Being part of an educational community requires participation. Participation may occur directly with the professor or tutor, and although this form is highly important, horizontal participation—namely, interaction among peers—must also be considered. Sharing experiences and learning, as well as developing the ability to communicate and even to engage in self- and peer-evaluation, are skills that learners need to cultivate.
Communication is the foundation of all teaching and learning activities. Without communication, nothing exists. Sharing ideas, thoughts, and feelings is an integral part of learning. The professor has the responsibility to foster spaces for open communication. Simple strategies can be implemented to create opportunities for both vertical communication (professor–student) and horizontal communication (student–student).
Non-technical skills (also called soft skills) are just as important as technical knowledge in healthcare and education.
As professionals, students need to learn to communicate in a professional manner; how we communicate with patients, customers, clients, etc will determine how they perceive us and interact with us. As an instructor I would emphasize not only the course material, but also encouraging the students to communicate as a professional.
Communication is the key to success.
I learned that non-technical skills like communication, time management, and self-advocacy are just as important as content knowledge. I’ll apply this by encouraging students to build these habits early and modeling them in my own interactions.
Teaching them the importance of properly communicating is a great tool.
I plan to demonstrate proper communication, reading and writing skills in my recorded, written and interactive course materials. Sharing tips and best practices are always best encoded when shown and lived by the instructor.
I think giving them examples of how to communicate properly online is great.
I totally agree we have to communicate with our students and let them know classroom expectations and also respond to their inquiries in a timely manner.
Giving examples are a great way and example :)
How to communicate with the instructor by giving an example.. also explain the importance of communication.
