Implementing Online Learning Augmentations in Hands-on Programs --> The Importance of Engagement

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

The importance of allowing students the flexibility to customizing their instruction.

Even though online learning is growing there is still a massive group of students who will gain more knowledge and retain more information if there are hands on activities and using real work scenarios.

Comment on Amanda Sturm's post: Throughout the course so far, I have learned that hands-on learning tends to be more effective than online learning. Engaging directly with materials and activities helps to reinforce concepts and improve understanding. I have also come to understand that each student has unique learning habits—what works well for one may not work for another. Finally, I’ve observed that students can become frustrated when they know the answer but must wait for others to respond, which can affect the overall learning experience in group settings.

Technological advancements have made it necessary to adapt to new ways of approaching information and delivery therein. What is new to us, may be the new normal to incoming students and thus, makes it to where we, the intructors, must adapt.

This module provides information about engagement types.  Applied engagement includes instrumental and communicative methods where instrumental is task-oriented, solving problems, and cause and effect relationships, communicative regards feelings, needs, and desires.  I learned that it is important for the instructor to provide the context, but allow students to explore the applications.  As a student, I grew up with mostly traditional learning, so it is more difficult for me to step outside of that traditional way of learning.  I intend to work more toward customized learning options for my students in a non-linear format so my students can learn in ways that best suit them and help deepen their knowledge.

Engagement in schools is a cornerstone of effective education. It plays a pivotal role in fostering academic success, emotional well-being, and personal development.

Some students learn better when it comes to hands on.

Students tend to engage more with the learning when they have the ability to customize their learning.

I've learned that engaging students effectively, whether in person or online, requires understanding their individual learning styles and needs. As an instructor, I intend to apply this by incorporating varied learning activities and resources into my courses, allowing students to learn at their own pace and ensuring they are actively involved in the learning process.

I have learned that I need to utilize online tools since so much of the world has basically been in an experiment through Covid-19 and at-home learning, and we have learned a lot about how students connect with effective online tools. We need to lean in and use what is great instead of resisting the way things are going with technology. I am interested in trying to use the Anylogic Simulation Software that was given as an example. I think many students can get a lot from something like this. I would be interested in if anyone has used it and in which context. How did it go?

Other topics I have found interesting in this class so far are using technology to differentiate Instruction, promoting communicative learning, and the encouragement to emphasize understanding over memorization. I do wonder if students can feel inundated and bored with too much technology and screen time in school. In my district at least, we use a ton of technology, and often I see students wanting more personal connection and discussion.

That you free up the faster learners from the slower ones.

Hand-on learning is extremely beneficial for students .

As a trade school instructor students need to see and use real tools with real equipment before myself as their mentor feel comfortable sending them out in the real world.  Now that being said, we do have a computer room with dozens of stations where students have access to all kinds of modules, simulators, and many interactive programs that are very useful.

Comment on JUNE VASQUEZ's post: 100% agree

online learning is superior to in- person learning for a variety of reasons

Online learning is encouraged, but in person is of more value.

Students want to lean! but more than that they want to create and make things work. Its called art!

Students can learn theory from different sources, but applications, skills or hands-on skills are  very important in Nursing. During Covid we became creative in showing videos of skills, Swift River scenarios but we found out that students still lagging on hands on and  had difficulty applying theory learned from watching videos of the procedures.  Performing the skills multiple times is more effective in gaining mastery of specific procedure.

I believe students online can be difficult if they are not motivated or easily distracted. May depend on their learning style. I still believe that lab and skills are important hands on.
