Blooms taxonomy helps students connect classroom learning into real world outcomes.
Competency based instruction using Bloom's taxonomy clarifies things for the student, no matter what age or grade level
I believe competency training certainly has a place in the training of all people who's jobs require detailed and precise performance, like nursing. The use of Bloom's taxonomy is what helps instructors ensure they are providing the best possibility training at the level required for our students to form beginning level competencies in their future profession.
I like the part about industry settings the standard not the instructor. We are always reaching out to industry asking what is needed and what is changing to better prepare our students when they graduate.
Its very important to be able to correlate theory into practice. When in the lab it's necessary to make the connection to what is done in practice. Oftentimes we don't always have the same equipment that is used in practice so as the instructor it's vital to make the experience in the lab as realistic as possible.
Comment on Ben Johnson's post:
Totally agree, Ben. I am wondering how difficult it will be to differentiate the needs of the students individually. Does this attempt make it more difficult for the instructor to address the needs?
I believe the educator should utilize all of the domains of learning with students.
Its important to use the real world with how it relates in the lab. Although some of this may not take place all of the time, but, can help suffice for the students.
It is important to challenge students outside of their comfort zone for them to learn.
Competency Based Education is so important, not only for the students learning, but also shop safety.
This was helpful because I am less familiar with the "affective" (interest, attitude and values) domain of Blooms. Receiving, responding, valuing, organization, characterization all very important to the learning process.
By giving hands on stimulates the other learning styles. Encourages them to think, ask questions, analyze and assess what they have accomplished. All to give them real world experience.
I learned that different students need to be motivated in different ways. Blooms Taxonomy helps decipher things a bit.
Also... Competencies help students relate what they learned in the lab to real world scenarios.
Comment on Omar Muneeb's post: yes this relates to a technical school
I am applying this through holding lecture in the lab with the components we are discussing. I will be disassembling and working with the components while lecturing. This keeps all learning styles engaged.
I found it interesting that people with the same learning styles learn best when they're in groups together.
Comment on Laura Hogins's post: use all three styles
It is important to apply the knowledge we've learned to competency based education. Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor each play an important part in the learning process.
