The best test for competency is to ask the students critical thinking questions. 

Using virtual learning instruments are good for getting the basic skills, but they lack the ability to show the students the true danger in the task. 

I am applying this through holding lecture in the lab with the components we are discussing. I will be disassembling and working with the components while lecturing. This keeps all learning styles engaged.
