Shared accomodations

In our school the adjunct instructors all share the same space pretty much. Some of the instructors carry all of their materials with them. I have noticed that the people we work with are all very respectful of eachother, and if someone sees something that doesn't belong to them, they don't mess with it. Common curtesy goes a long way.

Time is Essential

I used to struggle with time management in the past, and honestly still do sometimes when caught up in work. My students, some more than others, tend to struggle with this concept quite a bit. I am thinking of a way to get them to become more aware of their time and what they do with it. Maybe this will help them to see where their time is best spent when keeping their future in mind.

New instructor

I agree that it is not best to announce to the class that you are teaching for the first time. Just like in the field, never tell your patient that this is the first time doing a procedure. This will make the patient uncomfortable and not have trust in you.

Cheating

I caught a student cheating on his midterm exam by having information written on his forearm. I confronted him, gave him a zero for the exam grade, wrote him up, and he has to turn in a 2 page paper on the information he was cheating on. He admitted he cheated and that he made a mistake. It is not always fun to deal with these situations, but I feel it is necessary.

Difficult student

I like the idea of handing out colored cards to each student to allow them to ask that many questions during the class. Sometimes I think students like to ask questions to get the instructor off track.

Day one

I have found it to be very helpful to inform my class on the first day the penalty for late assignments and examinations. I post on the student's portal an extra document dealing with these issues and what situations will allow the student to make up an examination.

What stresses me out....

People that are supposes to be roll modals are not because they want their students to be their friends.

Lost....And Found

We I started my job I was just told when to start. Got to class on my first day of work, was took to the class room and told here is your class and here are your books...talk about a drop off in never never land. I had to start for scratch. New out line, new test and new projects...and then I was found, I found out that starting fresh was the best way to go, at least I knew where to begin and it was so much better then picking up were someone else left off...

Common Instructor mistakes

It is important to focus on the student and make sure they understand the standards of the class.

Managing student behavior

Student behavior should not be ignored especially if it poses a problem.

Dealing with a challenging student

Keeping students engaged and excited about their education is a benefit for both the institution and the students.

Setting the stage for your success

Being prepared for class allows the students to maximize their education.

Eliminating Stress

What is a stressor that you have managed to successfully eliminate? How Did you do that and can you offer an action plan for your fellow stressed out instructors?

Rubrics

What are your feelings about how rubrics help in the grading process with essays and projects?

Procrastination

How Do You teach someone else not to procrastinate? We can talk about it in theory, but what makes people change?

Remembering student names

I have a difficult time remembering names. Any ideas or tricks to remembering names easier?

First Day of Class

I have found that you can set the atmosphere for the quarter on this first day. If you give the students information on the course subject and your expectations on how you will handle homework, classroom activities and exams the students will relax more and learn more.

GTD (David Allen) @

The "Task List(s)" in the module remind me of an organizational technique -- both a discipline and a set of deliverables -- from David Allen known as GTD ("Getting Things Done"). Allen's approach is very formal and involves a rigid grouping of tasks, but takes things one step further. In addition to the task itself, GTD advocates for listing the NEXT ACTION(s) required to execute on a task. VERY useful.
