Classroom management as set-up for the real-world

As diverse individuals come to a class, it is expected that our students come with different discipline background orientation, different state of mind, attitude, and emotional intelligence. It could be said that while learning is the most outcome that the school expects from students, classroom management also provides students the venue to condition themselves on how to behave in the real-world. They are like my children it is my job to teach them. When they get out of hand, I make sure that I stay in control. Do my family stress me out? Of course. They have not seen me all day and now I must deal with my home life. This is all part of the sacrifice that we sometime must bare to deal with. Just don't let it control you to the point where it interferes with your health and daily living.

Making time for Me

Working Monday through Friday 7:30pm-4:30pm at a hospital and then teaching Monday-Thursday from 6:00pm-10:00pm, my me time becomes very limited. My 1 hour lunch from my day job is my Me time.5:00-5:45 is my time to prepare for my class. 10:30pm-11;30pm is trying to catch up with family time. The weekend become Golden Time for all other catch up time.

Taking Control Of your time

Knowing what you want to accomplish and know what you need to accomplish is the first step in controlling your time. If what I want to accomplish can be put off for a later time then this will allow me the extra time need for accomplishing the things that I need to accomplish without time constraints.

Late assignments

I'm a math instructor for an online college. Students complete their assignments on the school website. That's another layer of learning for the students. At the very first day of class, I tell the students to ask any question they want. There is no stupid questions in my classroom. I rarely receive a question regarding how to navigate the assignment website. However, when I ask why a particular student about his/her late assignments, I often get answers about the difficulty of navigating the site. What do I do to help the students to ask questions right away when they encounter difficulties in how to use their assignment website?

Prioritizing

Maintenance

It can be so difficult to find time for yourself with all go the demands that are placed on us. I started with 4 minutes a day. It was extremely difficult, as patience is not my virtue, to sit still that long and be quite, and not do anything...meditate. But. I forced myself to be still, and have no worked my way up to 15 minutes, slimmer abs, a glowing complexion, less wrinkles, more energy, and less feelings of stress. I refuse not to find 15 minutes for myself.

Acclimating

I recently moved to a new city. I am trying to acclimate to a new climate, culture, job, entire lifestyle. It's been stressful.

Making Time for Myself

I have found that making time for myself has been extremely helpful in increasing the efficiency of my output at both work and home. I started by allotting 15 min to myself everyday. In this 15 minutes, I do whatever pleases me most. It's my 5 minutes! I have earned it! No phones are answered, no demands met outside of my own. Give it a try!

Stress relief

At my last job I had so much stress that I had to start medication to help me cope. Since elimating that stressor and getting a different job I am doing so much better. I really enjoyed this education.

Change of attitude from high school to college mentality

I teach a lot of 18,19, and early 20 somethings, most of which have not gone to college elsewhere. I can tell that a lot of the problematic students still think they are in high school, and act like I am an authority figure they must deal with - instead of an expert in a place they have chosen to be. Anyone have any tips on this one? Thanks! Brian

4 Step Model for Successful Classroom Management

Specifically Step 3: Proactive Techniques work well for me. I move around the front of the room and I can barely talk without using gestures & vocal inflections! This course helped me to move around the classroom into the ranks of the tables & desks which I thought would intimidate students but they are receptive! I try to always greet the students coming into class, it makes them feel a little special to be acknowledged in a polite manner, no matter their age. I've learned that proactive techniques really do preventing problems.

Learning Rationale

It is so very important, especially for adult learners, that they have a desire to learn what is expected of them. Someone needs to have a genuine desire for the course content. When one has such a desire, it makes learning much more enjoyable and, more importantly, relatable. It also vital that adult learners see their instructors being excited about the profession they have chosen!

Coping with Stress

I always had problems dealing with stress. I find myself grinding my teeth and having trouble remembering. I have started to exercise again and found some relief. This module has a lot of great ideas, most I have heard of before. Overall, it was a great refresher.
