Cheating among Students

I have found the easiest way to deal with this as a continuous problem, is to: Make 2 versions of the tests and vary the tests among students known to cheat or sitting close together. Also, one hates to ask adults to sit in a particular seat, but that is also a remedy.

Coping with Stress

Work through your stress by sharing it with family members or very close friends. It may help to get thing of your chest. Exercise is a healthy was to deal with stress. Yoga class with breathing techniques can help as well. Eating healthy and getting plenty of rest can make you feel better overall

Stress

Stress can cause health problems both physically and emotionally. Too much stress can lead to job burnout, sickness, not being able to concentrate because of fatigue, depression and lact of interest in coming to work. Everthing in your work life and personal life suddenly becomes too much to handle.

Be Organized!

Since most instructors spend more than 50% of their time at work, it is just as important to be organized at your work place as it would be at your home. This will save you alot of time and frustration. Another time saver for instuctors is the use of textbooks that come with supporting materials. Also the use of scan trons is another easy and quick way to grade exams and homework assignments.

Preparing for your day

Utilizing good time mangement is very important for an instructor to master. It sets the mood of your day. Everyone at some point might be late coming into a classroom without time to go through your lecture notes or syllubus. Its those times when the instructor feels unorganized and frazzled and the students will sense that. Try to set your schedule up the day before so they you can briefly review what needs to be done in class. Its a good idea to write on the board a list of topics that you will be covering during your class time so that the students will now exactly what is going on for that day.

Writing Samples

I think one of the most effective ways of ensuring student success in writing and enhancing writing skills is providing students with a writing sample. A writing sample demonstrates to the student what reflects good writing and provides them with an example of the best way to achieve success in your class in particular. Every instructor has different expectations especially as it relates to writing therefore it is imperative that the instructor clearly define his or her expectations for writing assignments. A writing sample that shows the basic structure of the paper (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) and the successful formulation of a thesis in the introduction that has been proven in the body and conclusion of the paper is important. Also a sample paper would help students understand the proper format for reference citations and the reference page in order to avoid plagiarism.

Classroom Management Best Practices

What are some of your Classroom Management Best Practices? How effective are they?

Adult Learners

I've found that a lot of my adult students are easier to manage then those coming from high school or younger. They are usually more interested in getting the work done. As a young adjunct I try very hard not to be a buddy, its very easy to get caught up in it since I teach students that are very close in age to me with common interest.

Sleeping with stress

The only time I feel stress is while i'm trying to fall asleep. During the day I live basically stress free because I am continuously busy. Does anyone else experience this as their main "Stress Time"? If so, how best to reduce or eliminate night time stress?

For new instructors

The first day of being an instructor for adults is by far the most nerve racking experience I have ever encountered. Throughout the years I did learn from the mistakes I have made , now eight years as an instructor still learning but having fun. It does get easier as time goes on.

Professional Image

The professional image that you project will in turn be projected through the student. Knowing the expectations of the field they are going in and what it takes to become successful in that field.

Positive Attitudes

Encouraging positive attitude is always something an instructor strives for. Although the occasional student will bring in an attitude that doesn't represent the upbeat positive student that you are looking for. Sometimes it helps to speak to the student in a private environment to see if there is something you can help with. This builds rapport with your students letting them know that you acknowledge them and are concerned about their success. Which 95% of the time solves the situation and removes the negativity from the classroom.

Team work

I think that on the first day of class while introducing the syllabus along with expectations for the course that it is important to express team work. In an office setting the office runs and depends on team work. If a student preparing to enter the medical field does not believe in team work it will greatly hinder their progress. In the class I always address them as team. Enabling them to get the concept on board prior to entering the workforce.

Motivational Learning

I think the best thing we offer here at Concorde is hands on learning. Which I call motivational learning. The students tend to be more excited about these classes. Especially when they are giving injections or doing phlebotomy.

Copying

Hello: I have found several ways to reduce stress and how to cope. I have a few hobbies that help me to deal with these issues each day. I play guitar daily and play until I feel comfortable. I do have issues with getting enough sleep. However, I have learned to pace my self and to realize that there is tomorrow. I prioritize task continually and have found this a great way to handle issues.

Overworked

Hello: I work at a very small school and they ask us to pull double duty on various items. We have many vacant positions and so they do not fill them so we are asked to preform the duties ourselves adding to already heavy workloads. I have found that I need "me time" my family is grown so when I'm away from school I have me time. I do what I want as I want then get back to the task.

Knowing your limits

Hello Everyone: We all must know our limits when we manage our time and get organized. I have been teaching the same courses for a few years now so My notes are becoming dated or stale so I have been interjecting new material as the industry dictates. This helps keep me up on trends and helps to keep the student involved.
