Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

soft skills using them daily

At the start of each class, my students introduce themselves and greet eachother as they are in the work place. This helps the quiet student the opportunity to make small talk that they will be doing daily in the doctors office, this is one of the most important skills required of a medical assistant. They are who will be putting the patients at ease

adult vs kids

I have had the opportunity to teach bout younger kids and adults; I find in easier for me to work with adults. I agree they are more motivated and goal orientated but you must listen to them and acknowledge their questions with respect. I find that if they see no value to the material they will not participate but when they see how the information or lesson impacts their life they are eagerly motivated to participate.

motivate

How can I motivate students in a class that they may not particularly enjoy?

refocus

How can I refocus a large group of students who have lost focus in a subject?

active vs. passive

intrinsic/ extrinsic

IT IS A GREAT REVIEW OF HOW TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS IN THE LEARNING ENVIORNMENT. I BELIEVE THAT BOTH ARE NEEDED TO BETTER ENHANCE THE STUDENTS ABILITY TO LEARN

Learning student learning styles

I have learned over time that different students obviously have different learning styles, and they tend to linger or wander if they feel something is not hitting close to home, or they do not understand exactly what the material is being relaid to them is.

Empathy

Understanding and relating to students and their problems, helps to start the connection process with your students. It lets them know you are on their side.

Enthusiasm Vs. Apathy

Instructor enthusiasm is the essential force needed for student success. Instructor apathy is a virus that can wipe out an entire class.

Making it meaningful

As a facilitator it is absolutely essential that we make our classroom, lectures and labs meaningful to each individual student in our class. The ability or inability of the instructor to inspire a diverse adult classroom will not only determine student success by retention as well.

Autonomy and security

I agree that these techniques help with both intrinsic and extrinsic students.

Understanding cultural differences

I have found that is is not only about an individuals personal beliefs yet there cutural surroundings that also have a big part in the developing there characterisitics.

Motivation

I am a big proponent of finding what motivates your students so that every student has the opportunity to succeed in the classroom. I strongly believe that there are no resistant students, but rather, only inflexible instructors. Meeting the students where they are at and providing them with both structure and flexibility to learn is the most effective instructional method.

maintaining student rapport

as with any relationship specific people skills must be developed in order to sustain the instructor student relationship.

students with preconceptions

many times in order to reach certain students you must overcome their pre conceived notions on how they must be taught.

Motivating Students with Life Issues.

Many times students are overwhelmed by matters external to the classroom experience. Working with such students can be both rewarding and challenging

Student Motivation

any good ideas for keeping students motivated during theory? today two of my students were sleeping =/ the rest of the class was fine and fully involved in the conversations and topics.

Flexibility

An effective adult education facilitator must have the flexibility & skill set to deal with an immense variety of students, each with their own individual goals, problems, backgrounds and fears. The essential posture for an adult education facilitator is one of: neutrality, authority, knowledge, and student success.

Always being positive

I must say being in the Education industry it is challenging to be positive especially when you are pulled in many directions. My question is how do you avoid burn out from a week where there is elevated activies going on a campus and you are pulled in all directions?
