Focusing on the positive

I find that many students tend to focus on only the negative things when they turn in dishes to me. I try to direct them not only to the things they could improve but the things that are worth repeating the next time they produce the same dish. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way.

How to manage students suffering from PTSD?

My campus receives several Reserve/National Guard members coming back from combat situations. At times, they can be aggressive and militant to their fellow classmates and instructor(s). What are some techniques to handle these VERY SENSITIVE situations?

Team Quizzes

I have used in the classroom a concept of team quizzing. It is not always practical but for purposes of this training it is perfect. I printed out 4-5 sets of the letters A-D on different color papaer laminate and reuse. I give a set to each small group in the class and read out the quiz questions or have them on a powerpoint. In their group they come to the best answer, hold it up and then we compare why we got which answers and talk it through. It gives student confidence in themselves through a group process not just individually calling on one student at a time.

Keeping it real!

I try to relate the class or lecture topic to practical application in the real world, and how they can use it.

Focus and Passion

We all have to deal with red tape and distractions with the places we work. We cannot let that distract us and let us get off course and loose our passion for the students succes. What do you guys think about this?

Rare But Social Use of Praise

Considering not all students are interested in every topic of a subject or whole subjects, I like the idea of extrinsic motivation because as per the definition, it provides students with something positive to look forward to. However, in the adult classroom, I think in terms of praise or materialistic rewards, it should be rare and given in public because of several reasons. One, when the adult student is finally rewarded with praise after many attempts, it holds more value because it was harder to achieve. Not to say, in a semester's worth of classes, the instructor should be so stingy with praise that it is given only in the last few weeks of class. Instead, rather than giving praise every class, it should be given every week or two weeks for an especially good point. It seems to me that by giving it all the time, it diminishes the value of the praise and students do not think they have to work too hard to receive it. Additionally, because these are adults and not children on the elementary and middle school level, constant praising won't seem juvenile. Because the praise is so rare though, it could be beneficial to publicly praise the student in front of other students so the value of the commendation increases. Healthy competition can always work to promote a prosperous learning environment. Approving a student's work in terms of comments on research papers or projects is also crucial, but public praising can lift a student's academic spirit. One last comment I'd like to make on this is that because the praise is rare, it is important for the instructor to still be supportive and kind in their disposition. An instructor who is too strict or severe in their teaching may not want to implement this because the extrinsic motivation will probably have more of a negative reaction.

It's my idea, darn it.

As it turns out, I teach this in Psychology, but it was a nice way to see it applied in the classroom. I try to stress the importance of their own autonomy, reminding them that their grade is their choice, and encouraging them to seek out assistance from me or other school resources. I also attempt to bring to them many different teaching tools to reach every learning style. And offering them applied methods for psychology hopefully taps into both extrinsic and intrinsic learning.

student vs customer

The sudents are going to be our product for the field,but at the same time our students are our customers. With out our students we have no end product. With that said, We need to treat our students as people as well as our customers. Be understanding to their needs as well as sensitive to what the field expects form them. making sure the students know how much we care about teir future is important, this seems to help with the student/customer relationship.

Motivation

Your motivation for teaching the subject should mirror your students motivation for learning the subject.

Students as customers

Students are our customers but are also are product. If we lower our standards our produts suffers then we have no customers left. It is important as instructors we work to raise the students level and encourge them to reach that level and be sucessful.

Constantly finding new and innovative ways of teaching and learning can create an effective classroom.
