Motivating a student with no expressions

I have a student this course that shows no emotions not even facial ones.He is very smart and does every thing well. He does not hardly talk to anyone including me the Instructor. I did get him to laugh and after two weeks he does talk more. Does any one have some advice on how to get him out of his shell? He is going to have to talk to customers.Help?

Reading your students to make teaching changes.

There are ways to read your students from day one,I stand at the door and great my students on the 1st day. This gives me several opservations too see the following: 1.To see for proper hygene 2.Proper Shoes 3.I.D and safety glasses 4.Attitude 5.Who they hang out with. 6.Where they sit. 7.To greet them. 8.Show them I care about them and the rules

language deficencies

I am an automotive instructor and some of the terms of our feild do not have direct translstions. how then do you get someone who does not speak english well to understand the concept i am teaching?

Motivate your student

Empathy, enthusiasm, confidence, these are the building blocks to keep students aware and active in a class room. Motivating students is really easy. Be confident and show them in their learning style. If you are enthusiastic during the process the students will follow and learn then becomes really easy.

Keeping focus

When teaching a class, it is important to keep the attention of your students. Demos of product, the how to and whys are always great. Real life experiences added in keep the class room running also. Being in a tech school must of the students here learn from hands on and touching the product. My students learn from doing a task better than reading a book and that is why I say demos are a good thing.

learning enviroment

Unless the classroom or lab has a comfortable feel where the student can relaxe or let done barriers that would not allow the information to be recieved there will be no learning. You might as well be talkig to the walls.

Pace your class

It is often hard to pace your class to cover the material when it is large,it has different age groups and different backgrounds. Each class is unique and seems to a personality.Covering all the material and leaving nobody behind can be quite a task.

Class VS Lab

i find that my students really like the short lectures and go to lab and put their hands on what we talked about in class. all students like lab. so i teach a lot out in the lab.

Students do talk

student will talk to you if you show them that you are a good listener and i mean listen to all they have to say. then they will open up to what is really on their minds. the word will get around to other students. like i said in my subject topic "Students Do Talk " i have had so many students drop in my class that are not even my students just to talk and tell me their issues.

baby steps

In addition to the meet and greet on the first day,I like to demonstrate a simple process on the first day,and have the entire class practice while I observe, and make myself available for assistance and reinforcement of the activeity. This provides early value in the learning process,as well as a way for me to get to know everyone in the class, and where they are in the learning process.

Building rapport with students

I think that teaching does not comprise just the classrooms, board markers, exams and worksheets. The triumph of a teacher depends mainly on how he/she handles the students. Many instructors fall short in the teaching profession because they fail to understand people. I feel the following are the most imperitative parts towards developing rapport with your students. 1. Respect your students. The instructors demeanor should make the students feel comfortable. Your words should reflect your personality. 2. Sense of humor. A teacher must have this positive quality. If you can’t laugh in the class, something is really wrong. Sense of humor illuminates classrooms. Students tend to crave for such sessions. 3. Speak positively. An instructor is someone who can make a difference in students’ lives. 4. Knowledge is the key. An instructor is respected for his/her knowledge first. 5. Remember Names. Students love you when you remember their names. It gives a kind of personal touch to your teaching. 6. Say no to partiality. Always remain balanced. Keep your mind sensitive to the expectations of each student. While you teach, make sure you have perfect eye contact with all sections in the classroom. 7. Be a good instructor but strict. Never compromise on disciplinary issues. Your students must know what type of a teacher you are in spite of your friendliness. 8. Be what/who you are. Don’t imitate anybody or don’t present a wrong picture about your personality. Be quite honest with your personality. Stick to your inner voice and keep moving.

Applying Learning

I think its very imperitative for instructors to understand the students learning style. Each student will have a learning style in which they tend to learn best. It involves their preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information. Learning styles do not tell us about a person's abilities or intelligence, but they can help the instructor understand why some tasks seem easier for some than others. There are several benefits of thinking about and trying to understand our students learning preferences: 1-people learn most effectively when the strategies used are closely matched with their preferred learning style; 2-sometimes one can improve their learning by knowing what their strengths are and then doing more of what we're good at; 3-often instructors can improve the learning by knowing what the students weakness is and trying to enhance their skills in those areas 4-different situations and learning environments require different learning strategies, so it's best to have a large repertoire from which to draw, which relies on the instructor and the student to come together.

Retention in class

I really feel that retention in classes truly depend on several factors but the instructors enthusiasm and knowledge about the course can and will be inspirational to most all students of any age group.

real life experience reinforces ideas

I have found that a relevent real life story, particularly involving successful people that the students are of, that reinforces an idea helps students retention of ideas and concepts.

stundent are worried about auto industry

I explain to them they alway be in demand because if new cars slow the older ones have to fix. So they will always have work.

enjoying learning

I have found if I can make fun and entertaning the y seem to enjoy and understand better.

Student fears

I recently had to deal with student fears as this economy drops. The manufacturer of the product they are learning to work on had cut production by a large percentage. I had to reassure them that the good shops will still be good shops and that instead of buying new more people will hold on to the old and maintain it. Yes some condensing of busnesses would occur, but the good shops will still be there. The students responded positively and I felt that I allayed thier fears.

Motivation by completion of a project.

I find to keep students in my field of training that guidance through a project which is successful and they can hear, touch and appreciate it upon completion. It is not hard to keep the motivated and interested in their future.

long dicsussions

I find when I have a long discussion planed for the days lesson that if I pause briefly at scheduled intervals that the students don't seem to be focused on "when will we be done" and usually use the short break times to discuss the previous material and have questions for when we return. This acts as a review right after the material is presented.

Student Retention

I order to have student retention you must first have student attention. Learning must always be fun regardless if it is youth or adult. When a person or a student enjoys what they do, they are more interested and evolved. Keeping students motivated and evolved in a positive environment will always keep retention at a high standard.
