motivation

remember to share experiences with students. offer examples of success and bring in guest speakers.

students

always value their opinions. express enthusiam about the class and course content. encourage participation offer recognition/rewards for progress. give positive feedback

Reaching all students

When a lecture is of a particular topic that some students may already know and others not it is very difficult to keep all interested and challanged. There should be a variety of learning tools at the ready for different learning styles.

student preparation

students are ultimately responsible for their own education, however instructors should make the learning enviroment comfortable, fair and open to all students. include everyone nad be open to new ideas.

college success

new students should try and resolve any issues they have early on. in regards to situations that might affect their success, like transportaion, childcare and work schedule. it is possible to manage school, personal life and career.

Should first day orientation be more then one day?

This would allow us to review note taking, see how well they take notes, review listening skills, get to know our students...

Simply being a very good instructor will most likely provide...

... your students with: The correct answer according to the quiz is B. Intrinsic. I disagree. I believe it's both. As we learned, most external motivators are: instructor's emphasis on the relevance of a lesson, helpful/supportive feedback, extra-curriculum activities, grades, prizes and handshakes, all provided by the instructor. Therefore, why doesn't "simply being a very good instructor" provide both?

Dealing with combative listeners

What is the best way to respond to listeners with a combative stance?

Security & Autonomy

I enjoyed this session. I did not really understand the difference until this course. The class stressed the significance of security depending on the students beliefs opppose to what the instructor actually thinks. Instructors should be very well prepared before each class session. It shows the students that the lession has been thought out and made easier for them to process the material.

Help

what have you used that seemed to be a positive motivator for your students, without it seeming like a bribe??

Autonomy

I feel it is absolute that adults receive a level of independence in the classroom. For many of my students it might have been twenty years since someone told them what to do, how to do it and when to do it. I think that providing a decent level of autonomy can inadvertently induce security, which is a good practice.

student are unprepared for class

my student show up for class without reading the chapter we are studing. they may have a week to read one chapter and still do not finish the questions for each chapter.

Many kinds of motivation

Motivation is one of those things that is difficult to gage. There are so many students that are self motivated and become more driven by their continued success. Those who are not intrinsicly motivated need a push to get them moving in the right direction. If they have some success initially it seems to help them continue in a positive direction.

maintaining structure

When the class is not structured enough I find the students losing focus and often getting confussed as to where they should be in their skill set. It is of great importance that there is a certain amount of predictability.

Student retention

I have found that when student's are older and have not been in school for many years they are more likely to drop out. What has helped is to acknowleged their small successes which will give them the confidence to continue and complete their course/program.

Motivation

I totally embrace motivation via enthusiam. If students are fired up to learn because of intrinsic motivators, feel good about achieving goals, and have some fun in the process, then they will no doubt be successful in the course.

Know your students!

I agree strongly about getting to know your students. This helps in assessing where they are as learners. If an individual student was given modifications for homework and tests then it will be important to know this. If the student was used to having specific assignments modified to meet their educational needs then the college may have to do the same in order to keep the student on tract.

Learning adjustments

It is critical for an instructor to be able to identify the learning styles to include impairments. Th training can be design to accomidate all students in a fashion that fits their education needs.

Motivating

Everyone wants to be validated and know they matter. motivation gives them that extra push to continue

Learnaactivity

This to me is vital, it determines the way a learner is able to learn. Being flexible is a big part of that.
