Getting student's and policies together

I feel as a instructor that school and class policies and enforcement of those policies is a must in any class room enviroment. I also think that if you cover in detail what is expected of the students on the first day of class and what the possible out come may be if policies are not followed, helps with class control there after. If you include your students in the discussion and possible affects if no rule's were in place at all, they come to the conclusion that rules are inplace for a reason and are more willing to comply. This helps with not only class control but with creating a learning atmosphere where the students feel that they have a say in their education process. Policies are there to help not only the instructor but to help the student as well, and by showing them they have a say goes a long way.

Military school?

I agree that we should keep our standards of professionalism top priority, but what happens when instructors get too authoritative. When I hear some instructors disciplining students it sounds like the beginning in that Twisted Sister video...tuck in that shirt, stand up straight, wipe that smile from your face, who are you, where do you come from, are you listening to me?, what do you want to do with your life... How do you get through to those guys that this isn't high school and most of our students will respond when talked to.

forum1

make sure you print off the information,Great stuff

your expectations

Make sure the students understand what is expected from them from day one then there will be little to no arguments from them on the last few days of class

Hand outs

Even tho we develop our handouts, Sometimes they are not up to the par the students expect......... Deal with it

Prep Time

Alway be prepared for class, the students will know when your not

tests

We write our own test and quizes all are multible choice

Test's

I do a really good review, and still cant understand why a student has the NEED to cheat

Questions

I have learned a few new ways to question students

Learning styles

Trust me when I say this, When teaching a customer service and Computer class it's tough to teach to all different styles.

disrespect

How do you deal with students with no seens of respect? I try so hard to be a good teacher but how do you show face with the other students when you are disrespected in class time and time again and you think you are doing the right thing by removing them from the class but due to the retension quota the next day their they are again. I fell hopeless and when i talk to my superiors they make me feel like it is my fault. They say it is my inexperience which is causing the tension but i have never had a job where i get disrespected and cursed at almost on a daily basis and no one is held accountible. I am starting to think it is me! I don't think anyone regardless of $$ or job title should have to deal with this on a daily basis. Fortunately, the rest of the class is a pleasure and i will continue to work hard on becoming a better instructor for all students and hopefully make a differents.

9th grade level

I did not realize that students graduating high school were for the most part reading at a 9th grade level maybe some of the issues they are having with testing is because of it and they do not want to say in open forum that they do not understand that is quite a eye opener for me What does that say for our public schools?

Preparation is key

I find that being prepared for the day’s lesson plan is essential. I try to get to the class room well before the students arrive, write the date and objectives for the day on the white board along with any activities or tests we will be doing. I then gather all the items that I would like to pass around and organize them neatly in an area that I can easily access them. Review the lesson plan in my head and make notes on key points that I want to cover. I then take a quick mental break. By getting things together ahead of time, relieves a lot of the stress and anxiety I used to get when I was a new instructor. It prepares me to go into the day with a confident feeling that I know the material, can answer any question that may arise, and can deliver it with enthusiasm.

Theaching Environment - the space

Granted, the teaching space can affect the students. However the information provided in this module must also remind the begining instructor that the teaching environment is relevant to the entire facility they are teaching at. The begining instructor needs to look at what other classes are alloted and work within that environment.

Babysitter

The information on not being drug into students personal baggage could be very beneficial to young instructors. However, this important topic was only a single paragraph. Do any discussion members have a favored method of advising instructors so as not to "enable" students with issues - but at the same time acting in an ethicla and empathetic manner?

Self confidence

I liked how they addressed the confidence issues that some of us face in the classroom. From some of my observations alot of instructors ,while very talented in the field, don't posess the social skills to be confident in front of the classroom. I myself found that it comes in time. Just because you have the knowledge in that field does not mean you are qualified to teach that course.

Developing Additional Skills

How do you develope "Additional Skills" as an instructor by Knowing Yourself? How about , Reading technical journals.

Very good reminders on teaching

I like the format and the style of this type of learning

Tests

I use a variety of tests from skill to short answer and everything in between. That gives me a better idea on my students development and how to aid each one.

Testing

I use a variety of tests from skill to short answer and in between to get a full picture of my students development.
