Judging a Book By It's Cover

A lot of comments are made about how young I look. I fear that this may distract students from learning as well as decrease my confidence in teaching due to their reactions. I am a new instructor in the field of nursing; however, I have a plethora of experience in the field. I would appreciate any tips from leaders whom may have experienced this so that I can overcome this hurdle early on in the beginning of my teaching career.

How to help students to understand harder couse content

I am teaching in a career college and am teaching a class that has much harder and more indepth content. This is my second time teaching this class and the first class did not realy make the adjustment to put in more study time. How do I help them to understand this without scaring them away??

While I was in college I was amazed by how many instructors in health and fitness or the medical profession were not healthy or fit. Now as an Instructor in Health and Fitness I am on the oppsite side of the coin... Pants are fitting a bit tight after xmas break. How do you feel about unhealthy health and medical instructors?

Dealing with difficult students

Greetings Everyone. As we all know, we may encounter a student who has always been on the "A" grade but trying to ask questions with the checklist mentality. Some examples include a) The syllabus didn't tell me what color font to use? b) My previous instructor never told me APA uses italics c) I never knew that I should cite sources in the discussion forums d) You are not from this country to know how to write or speak English. So, regardless of how professionally you maintain your tone, the messages are insatiable to the student. So, how do you deal with such difficult students whose questions? Thanks. Why are some instructors very good at lecturing?

Like many great leaders, public speakers to peace makers currently and before us, they all share something in common - their great ability to influence people with the message that they convey to the audience. I take a great deal in modeling my lector after them. Each course, I will continue to find new ways and approach to inspire my students & get my points across. I use many tectics style of lectures from a style of base my lecture around a single subject or question, begins certain topic with “What would happen if……?” approach to a case study discussion. Certain, I believe if there is rapport between me and my students, they will be a connection with the content I am sharing and more likely that the chance of their retention will be higher. They will be focused on what I am trying to share with them because they know I am considering this information important. K. Boodparset

How can you motivate your students to see the possibilities of success with their career training?

Typically, by sharing information about your career experience you are establishing myself as an instructor of my areas of expertise and authority. It shows how students can relate to me & gives them sense of comfort of my experience on the subject that they’re learning. In my class, I constantly explain to my students of what’s going in terms of current industry standard, company’s expectations and level of professionalism that I have to go through each project. I also, mention to my students at the beginning of the course that, not only I’m doing for a living is associated with what they’re learning now, but I am also in charge of hiring at my current agency as well. Therefore, I know exactly what employers or companies are looking for and what they expect of recent graduated students. K. Boodparset

Lesson Plan Resources

As a new instructor I am very concerned about developing my subject matter. I have little mentoring availableto me and have stepped into the job mid semester. I am looking for resources to help me in learning how to better prepare my course information. In reading these posts I was delighted to learn about ACTEonline and am wondering if there are more such sites regarding lesson plans, etc?

Career choice & learning style mismatch

As someone who has taught in the paralegal program of two career colleges, I think I have perceived a problem. Many students who come to career colleges are NOT written word learners; yet the legal field is all about the written word. In the PL program (for profit school)we are often pushed to increase retention. Yet, if students are not written word people, the law may be the wrong place for them. What to do?

Ensuring Comprehension

I teach primarily business courses and find that my students are able to show comprehension best through short essay questions. Are there any other methods that you use to test for this? Why and how? Bobbi Bricker

Using CATs in a Business Program

I teach within a business program. Does any one have any ideas to use CATs? I like closing the course with the students reflecting on what they learned and coming up with a question that is unanswered, but I would like more ideas. Bobbi Bricker

Checking In Questions

I find that in teaching courses like Economics, I often ask "checking in" questions to make sure we are all on the same page. Often even though they've heard the language throughout their lives, it is a difficult concept to grasp. Because of this, it is important to me that we are moving as a group towards a common goal. Asking "does that make sense?" or "why would this be important" allows for a small discussion, but also allows for people who are confused to speak up. Does anyone have similar things they do that I can use to build upon this technique? Bobbi Bricker

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

I find that I spend a lot of time catering to my visual and auditory students, simply because I teach mostly business courses. Are there any games that you know of that would assist my students who are more kinesthetic or written word oriented. I often use role playing, but it seems a bit tired at this point.
