Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Personal Hurdles

I find sharing my own hurdles in the education system and how I overcame them helps relieve the anxiety of the student to approach me with there own hurdles. It I believe also motivates them, showing them they can overcome and reach there goals with hard work.

Open Door

I find truly focosing and fostering an enviroment that the student feels comfortable communicating to you helps you as an instuctor pin point strugles that the students might have and gives you the opportunity to help them.

Team Sport

As a chef it is important to learn how to work in and or lead a team. I found that with putting students into groups they learn these nessesary skills.

Student Learning Assessments

Employing a variety of learning assessments, whether they be written, verbal or hands-on are tools that help both student and instructor measure learning ability, retention and progress.

The Art of Questioning

I encourage questions from my students and ask them "Open ended" questions to get them to think about a subject. I like to use terms like "Why does it work that way" or "Explain the steps necessary to accomplish the task and why is it necessary to follow that procedure" for example. This method gets them to think deeper about the subject and therefore retain the subject matter easier and longer. It also gets a good forum discussion.

Knowing the Learning Styles of Your Students

I believe that it is paramount to know the learning style of each student. This will give them the best experience to learn with their type of personality and therefore get the most from the course.

Course content & instructor experience

One of the quiz questions asked if course content should be selected based upon instructor experience and judgment. I understand that course content must meet the requirements of the curriculum but I also believe that instructor experience is beneficial with regard to adding material to the core/required content. If an instructor can add additional information or a lab project, approved by the department, which will enhance learning and provide clarity, it is the students who benefit.

Your Instructional Style

Hi Gary, How can an instructor improve their instructional style to really reach out to their students especially when the students are coming from different/diverse demographics. Some are slow-learner, some are fast-learner, others are focused on their goals while others are "just there" still trying to figure out what they really wanted in life.
