I have a very good personality and the students take well my teaching techniques; however, I feel I could use some advice on how to stress the importance of certain information?

Being organized is obviously key to being a good instructor. I know I struggle with organization... the stack of paperwork lying on the floor right now reflects that statement. Any ideas from other like me out there that are only teaching part time and have other things on their plate to deal with??

Effective Assessment is very interested to discuss. I had my higher education from four different countries, Associate Degree in Nigeria, Bachelor Degree in Ghana, Master Degree in United Kingdom and Post Masters Certificate in USA and have found two extremes of assessment criteria which are the essay type and objective questions. United Kingdom university education systems believes Essay testing which incorporate critical thinking while the USA feels objectives questions in the form of multiple choice is effective. I was surprise when I was presented with multiple choice questions during my Post Masters course in the USA. I am not here to judge which one is the best, but I believe blending different types of testing will create effective assessment.

One my first day I went over the class rules clearly and in depth. However, since that day, noone is paying any attention to them and I feel as if I have lost control of my class. How do I regain that control back?

I have been pulling stories from my experience in efforts to get my students excited about the subject, but that's not working. Any suggestions?

I have been using PowerPoint for my presentations and am now learning that having the students do actual bookwork is helping them learn.

This is my first time teaching in a formal setting and am having a difficult time connecting with my students. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Very seldom you will have a class that every student learns the same way or learn at the same speed. This is why group discussions are beneficial. After discussing the subject, put students into a group and allow them to discuss the topic and then have each group to state what they discussed in their group. Students learn from each other and they feel that they can be honest with each other in their group.

I think it is very important that the instructor is prepared for the class to start. The instructor should have done a preliminary walk through and gotten all material prepared for start of class.

I agree that with students the first impression is a lasting impression. My opinion, students start observing you most of the time before you walk into the class room. When a student discovers that they have a certain instructor for a class, they start asking other students who you are and what do they think of that instructor? Now the student have a preceed idea about you. It is now in your hands to make a positive impression if they have the opposite idea of your knowledge and skills.

Alone with my syllabus, I include a spreadsheet that shows the exact breakdown of their grades. I also send it via email to each student so they can see how their grades are calculated. Every day in class I request that the student list on their spread sheet their daily grades including if they were late and if they were absent. At the end of the Mod, I speak to each student individually and compare my notes with their notes. Students know what their grades are and their attendances at all times. So when they check their portal and it is a double check that everything has been posted correctly.

Professionalism should be demonstrated by all who have expectations of others to exhibit the same.

As an instructor, always carry myself in well respected manner, because of the field that I'm in, students need to always know how to respect, carry themselves, and most inportant teamwork.

I deliver my expectations of my students and the expectations of the class on day 1 of the class. For those who are absent on day 1, I redeliver those expectations at the beginning of day 2. I let the studnets know exactly what is expected of them, my objectives of the overall class as well as my daily objectives.
