teaching students with dyslexia

students with this learning disabilities are needing more support by allowing and giving them more time in reading, allowing them to figure out the grapics and wording with the lecture. perhaps allowing them to tape your lecture like hand held tapes.etc

students with language difficulties

in the past i have used over and over again illustrations with the words and pictures and trying to connect the words info with the sample pictures with the lectures and i felt that help my students learning.

student enhancement learning

i have used in the past during my lecture by using multiple style of technique like lecture, videos, discussion and quiz and still stay in focus with the Topic ... really works and it really kept students focus more.

Phygmalion Effect

This is an interesting topic because in my own personal experience, just on the first day after the introduction of each one ,asking some witty questions about their lives, asking about their job, family and favorites, I can really tell which one can do it with ease and confidence in my classes and the ones with probable difficulty. I'll experience more on this type of effect.

Role of instructor

I absolutely agree that 80% of the time, the learners should be "doing" and only 20% of the time, the instructor will be "telling". And all activities the learners are doing should be aligned to the learning objectives.

making student feel he is improving

when talking to student tell him he the good and the bad of what he is doing

gaining the confidence of my students

i seem to be doing a decent job but i really want to gain the confidence of students that present more challenges.

The Classroom

The use of peripherals really can make the students feel at home in a learning environment. They will have more concentration and are more inspired to learn.. I will try to add music this time, the 60 BPM. I'm excited to experience the outcome.

Active Learning

I really like the quote that says “Just because they're active doesn't mean they are learning.” At the same time, another important key point is “ It’s not because you are active that you are productive”.

Music for thinking

I love to play music in my classroom, Though my area of expertise is cosmetology. I feel that music helps their creativity. It has to be clean and a majority vote from the class has to take place before the music is accepted. This helps the student be in control of their atomsphere and also helps with teaching them the importance of not offending your co-worker or clients.

Facilitating a learning environment

With one of the posts, I noticed that the instructor wanted to know how to fit in a memorization learning environment to a three week course with alot of memorization. One of the tricks that I like to do to ensure a fun, learning environment (especially for my anatomy class)is to have mannequins from the esthetics department and have them to draw and write the muscles that control the facial, mouth, neck and shoulders. And then they would have to come up with a crazy acronym for each muscle and then recite it out to the class. Its very important for students to have fun with subjects that require alot of definitions and memorizations. I feel that it works best whenn you allow them to take control of their pace and it helps eliminate the negative words that we unconsciously do, because now we are controlling how they are thinking.

combination of different types of test.

I think better to combine different test questions like multiple-choice, true/false ,matching, and completion type in the singe test .

Formative Assessment

Formative Assessment is more important as it helps both teacher and student: it helps the teacher about student's understanding of the content and helps to evaluate conituously. For the student: it helps for identifying in which area ,the student is getting low score and how to improve the soore.

Importance of questioning

It is always better to involve all students in questioning. Because by questioning, students are stimulated by recollecting the teaching material and it is more beneficial for long term rememberance.

Learning styles

By assessing the students about the learning styles, as a teachers we can guide them individually. Also it helps to to create positive teacher- student interaction.

Supporting learning through collaboration.

I have noticed a positive shift when students bfeel supported by the joint energy of the group. At first they see themselves as individuals in a group. Showing them that everyone has similar goals for learning and personal growth, through supportive learning, they begin to weave a fabric of supportive energy that raises the whole group to a higher level. As a result, students feel responsible not only for themselves but also for their contribution in the overall scheme of class development. The metaphor is like that of rowing a boat, the journey becomes much easier when there are many willing hands to share responsibility and we realize we are all heading in the same direction, the direction of change.

best way of delivering

there is no best way, delivery will be different for different group and courses.succes can be only achieved by using multiple delivery methods.

first time

first day impression is the key of success for whole course.

well planning

good planning and well organized preparation before the start of the class will be the key of success for the teacher as an educator also will attract the attention of the students.

IEP's

I always ask students during our first class session to inform me of any special needs. Every so often I will have a student that is willing to share their IEP and from that we can talk about how I can best support the student in learning the course content. This prevents a situation where the student falls behind or loses confidence in his/her abilities.
