Communcation

This course is teaching me many tools that can be used to assist disabled students. It helps me understand all the obstacles a disabled student can face on a daily basis, depending on the disability.

One of my concerns is what is going on in our society that depression is so prevalent? What can be done about this epidemic?

Biggest challenge

I think that my biggest challenge when it comes to communicating with students in an online forum comes when I encounter a student who is either too busy or simply is not intersted in communicating.  This can get frustrating at times as I would like my students to achieve success in class each term along with having the knowledge and meeting the objectives that were laid out for the class.  I still do not give up on these students.  I try to communicate with all of the methods that we have stated before.  I also communicate with their advisors in… >>>

Communication is Key

Sounds like pretty cliche, right?  Communication is key.  Bla bla bla.

However, it really is!

I have students (online and on ground) who need to hear, read, and be guided through assignments more than once.

I have teachers who need to hear messages more than once.

I have so many examples of problems that have been solved with a simple phone call or email.

The Use of YouTube In The Classroom

I've been teaching online courses for almost 4 years now, and have watched the technological growth of not only the school I am employed by, but also that of the students.  Since we do not sit down weekly to discuss concepts of anatomy and physiology, the use of additional tutorials and handouts is critical to helping students better understand some of these complex subjects. I have found that by incorporating short educational YouTube videos into the Student Materials folder or even discussion forum blogs has sparked a better understanding than that of just the textbook.  I recognize that there are… >>>

Communication

After this course, I have learned many new communication techniques.

Magic Jack to the rescue

Since online students often cannot come to physical office hours, I use either Magic Jack or a prepaid phone for a number students can call.  This allows students to have a contact number for me, but I am not giving away my actual home phone.

New to Me

I learned about new websites that I was unaware of that I will be looking into in order to see if they will be useful to implement to supplement learning experience for online learners. These websites include ITunesU, and TeacherTube for example. I was also unaware that PBS (Public Broadcast System) may have information that I can use as well. My students come from various backgrounds, and are of differing ages, and or generations. As such, I like to implement a variety of approaches to the same information in the online enviroment for all my my differing preferences of learning… >>>

NEW TECH -My Challenge

Hello!

I share with my students that many times I learn as much from them as they might learn from me. As I am from the Baby Boomer generation, I admit I am not tech savvy, and have never used Twitter myself. However, my younger students do, and have encouraged me to sign up for this. I wish I had their energy!!

After taking the EL110 course, I was happy to learn about educational websites I was not previously aware of. For example, ITunesU, YouTube.Edu, TeacherTube, SchoolTube, and something else, photovoice. I cannot wait to check into some of these… >>>

gaming

I have not seen gaming used in my experience as an elearner or instructor. You-tube and other social media are great ways to share concepts, but not all students click each link and it is unclear whether it is advancing their learning.

challenge

I agree that it is difficult to incorporate games into some courses. Unfortunately, it doesn't always fit.

It would be nice to have the resources to create new ways to engage students, especially in the online environment.

Engaging online learners

I feel that the online learning environment is just as important as in class learning. I utilize a little bit of class time to cover the discussion threads just in case there are students that have questions. This can increase student engagement and we can brain storm answers as a class.

Communication barriers

The communication barrier that I come across is calling the students.  They receive so many calls from so many people who are trying to help however it becomes an issue because it's bombarding the student with so many calls.  When I try to communicate with the students about the course that are exhausted by the many calls and they are not willing to talk.  This limits my communication with them and I don't think that there should be so much communication.  It comes off as harassing.

What worked for me

I been teaching for about five years now abd I have to say that what has been working for me is that I contact my student using what I would say is a combination of the various ways to communicate with my students.  I use email and telephone to reach out to my students.  I do find myself texting a lot more.  I try to common Unisys the east that is best  for the student unless it's really unreasonable.

Utilize as much technology as possible

The more we integrate technoogy in the classroom the more relevant we are

Live Office Hours

I found the notation about coordinating office hours with due dates quite interesting.  We are a little backwards in this area. We are required to hold two hours per week of live/real time office hours so that we are available to students at defined times. However, our course unit due dates are Sunday midnight.  Very few, if any of us, are available Sunday night.  We should consider revising our unit due dates to Monday or Tuesday so that we can be available to students on those days.   Very few students show for office hours at the beginning of a unit, but… >>>

Communication

I think my biggest lesson learned from this course is the importance of setting the correct tone for effective communication at the beginning of the course while reflecting generational and personality differences.

Grading Rubric

I have found the weighting of elements within a grading rubric to be a challenge.  No one wants to set a student up to fail and I have seen many rubrics that do just that.   With one or two letter grades being wiped away by a single mistake or deficiency.    What techniques have been used in the past to assure fair weighting of each element in the rubric while providing the instructor enough latitude to apply their discretion to the quality of the students work?

Informative

This course was informative. I especially enjoyed the use of ruberics and communicaiton protocol.

Social Media in the Classroom

I found this class really interesting, I didn't understand how social media fit in with OInline Edcuation, but i can see that it expands the ways students can learn and provides new tools for learning. Liked this class a lot.

Other social networking sites other than Facebook

I'm curious about other social networking sites, does anyone have some suggestions?
