I believe that the greatest issue for any learning environment is a student's motivation, or lack thereof. An instructor may use as many tools as possible to teach a certain subject. But if the learner does not have the appropriate amount of motivation then the learning process is hampered. Cultivating a student's motivation is probably the best way to enhance their educational experience.
I learned that as an instructor I should analyze my teaching style, strengths, and weaknesses, because it is important to acknowledge them, utilize them and improve them to become a better teacher in the online environment.
Trying to make myself accessible online more and letting students learn more about me.
I have learned to understand the different learning styles of students. For example, introverted students might do better with online learning, but it's important to ensure they don't become too isolated and to encourage them to engage visually. Additionally, I pay close attention to students with special needs and disabilities to provide appropriate support.
I liked the video announcement suggestion. I also liked the list of questions to see if students are prepared for an online course.
Students learn in many different ways with different methods. Its good to stay on top of the different methods of teaching as the population changes.
I like the comment that the instructor made on posting video announcements. I agree that many students these days relate to video more than text. However, some of my announcements contain a lot of specific information that cannot be contained in a short video. I think that the best approach for me would be to include a video that summarizes this information, followed by a more detailed text description.
Having a good plan of attack is essential. For example, establishing a productive work environment without distractions ex: tv, children, noises etc., set a schedule for reviewing and completing assignments, engage in virtual interactions with peers.
Helping the students to know their own strengths and weakness as well as preferences regarding learning can better prepare them to be successful in an online environment.
Each student has unique learning styles and personalities that will impact their educational experience. Helping them to understand it themselves as well as being aware of it as an instructor will prepare you to assist them.
I've learned that students all learn in different ways, and we need to make sure as the instructors of online classes that students who are not traditional learners do not fall behind just because they do not fit the norm.
I think one way I can help to prevent this is make sure my lesson plans include things such as videos and diagrams and activities to help those who need to be a little more hands on or need visual or audio aids to help them learn the materials.
I've learned the importance of being flexible and present whenever they need assistance. I'll reinforce that needing extra support is completely ok.
What I've learned in this course is that teachers are more than teachers, they are motivators and sometimes the backbone that the student needs to stay focused and feel that they are getting what they need out of the assignment . I plan on being a motivator and a support system to my students.
Great information of different ways to engage online learners.
