Lecturing, a more traditional method of instruction, may be able to convey knowledge to large groups of learners but lacks the incorporation of learning styles and application of the knowledge being assessed later on. Identifying student's learning styles and tailoring lessons to allow the learner to best demonstrate their understanding through multifaceted learning styles is critical. Although, lab setting learning can be a challenge, accommodating both the learner and instructor using online labs sometimes makes it more probable for all learners to practice and demonstrate their knowledge and skills associated with a specific area/standard of learning.

The most common known styles of learning are;

Kinesthetic where learning is achieved by doing, being active and by being in motion.

Aural learning includes hearing, whereby the learned material is obtained through lecture and audio recording.

Visual learning is accomplished best by seeing, and developing mental images of what they are learning.

Useful in mentioning that Nursing education expects the student to be competent in all three styles, in order to attain competency-based nursing education.

It is important to taylor teaching the meet the needs of different learning styles to ensure the success for all students.

Everyone must hear an see what the Instructor is teaching or showing them in the lab.Students can ask any questions they need help in the lab.

Students prefer active learning over lecture alone. The learning process depends how well the student wants to know about the course.

Both lab and classroom for my course are a great combination of learned skills in the classroom, which now can be applied in the lab. I believe that combination completes that connection and the student meets the requirements, gains confidence and also can meet the competency for the particular field / career.

importance is in understanding your audience.

Comment on Omar Muneeb's post: Its cost effective to have students shown a procedure and practice in groups. Watch a video get in groups and give clear instruction and time limit for practice allowing everyone to practice with the equipment

Student's in post-secondary education have a variety of learning styles which must be satisfied and which can be satisfied through lab. A lab assignment may provide some if not all of the preferred learning styles in the lab including kinesthetic, visual, etc. While this is certainly the case, I believe that some instructors fall apart in their attempt to facilitate one learning method instead of all. Difficult, yes, but it remains necessary for us to adhere to the learning styles of all students if we are to succeed as instructors.

This version of learning styles was new to me. (diverging, assimilating, etc).

Assess students learning styles & capabilities per lab tasks to address proper knowledge has been attained.

Each student has their own learning styles

Active learning and cooperative learning are both student-centered instructional approaches that aim to engage students in learning, promote collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and enhance learning outcomes. While these two approaches have similarities, they fundamentally differ in implementation and focus. Active and cooperative learning are valuable instructional approaches that promote student engagement. Educators can incorporate both techniques to create a dynamic and effective learning environment that caters to diverse learning styles and preferences.

Since I am a clinical instructor, I must engage each student to perform skills. Pairing a student with another student, helps both students in deciding the best way to proceed to accomplish the task.

Each student has a prodominent learning style and would beneficial for each to be familiar which learning style is beneficial for success. The laboratory teaching environment provides students experiential learning. The strategies for lab teaching incorporates coopertive and active learning, which allows students to learn quickly and also motivates students to read the text material.

Teaching strategies for labs are quite different from traditional classroom-based learning. In the lab we are able to connect concepts and theories to real life applications. Understanding how our students learn will help us make informed decisions on how we teach in the lab.

Something mentioned in the module that I currently do is instruction, modeling, then hands-on learning. Without even realizing it, my lessons are built in a way that suits all three types of learners: aural, visual, & kinesthetic. I also want to try to incorporate more virtual learning through online experimentation.

know your learning styles and familiarize yourself with the lab.

In teaching my CTE classes, the cooperative and active learning approach is commonly intertwined so that all students will obtain the necessary instruction to be successful in my classes.

Instructors should use multiple strategies to address the variety of student learning styles and adapt those strategies based on the differences of individual groups of students/classes.  I found it very interesting to learn that studies have show students will gravitate toward more accountability/responsibility for their learning with less lecture; and demonstrate better writing and thinking skills in a cooperative/active learning environment.  I do offer an active learning environment...but still find that students come unprepared or have not finished required reading, etc.
