Course Planning for Internationalization

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Course Planning for Internationalization

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I think I've found a topic to work on - the blood donor questionnaire.  The FDA approved questionnaire really isn't culturally sensitive to immigrant donors.  I've also added an international piece to blood group systems.

I need to choose an assignment or create one. I am thinking of doing it for the pharmacology course I teach.

In the examples and faculty resource guide, I am finding many ideas on how to add assignments that foster global learning.  In the existing learning outcomes, I already have wording on diverse perspectives, so I can quickly implement some of these ideas without having to wait for curriculum committee approval to change LOs.

As  course descriptions can't be altered without a year long approval process from the curriculum committee, I'll be sticking to altering learning outcomes which should only take 6 months to get approved by the faculty

I plan to add additional lessons/discussions regarding employability. There are certain soft skills such as simply showing up on time and understanding diverse perspectives that can greatly enhance student employability.

Also, I liked the idea of bringing in a guest speaker with an international perspective. I think this can greatly enhance a students overall global perspective and perhaps give them insight on how to improve their global perspective.

Faculty Module #4: Course Planning for Internationalization

I've gained a deeper understanding of the crucial role course planning has in preparing students for a globalized world. I've learned that it's not simply about adding international content, but about fundamentally shifting the pedagogical approach. I will actively seek out and integrate diverse perspectives and case studies into my lectures and readings.

I learned how to incorporate international awareness into my course syllabus to deliver lessons and activities to assist the students to learn about their content on an international level.

I may add a multicultural awareness assignment that asks students to consider an international order form on a parts website. What C# coding constructs are available for multilanguage support? This would be a 500-word report.

The module offered great insight of ways to include a global perspective into both the curriculum and syllabi. By providing a global perspective to emerging entrepreneurs, the opportunity exists to provide a catalyst for a conversation and learning module on import\export of manufactured or wholesale items.

This module emphasized the importance of integrating global perspectives into courses to enhance students' understanding of international contexts. I plan to revise my course objectives to include global competencies, such as analyzing international practices or collaborating across cultures.

To start, I’ll adapt assignments to incorporate global case studies and diverse perspectives while working within current institutional guidelines. Although formal course changes can take time, adding these elements to existing projects will prepare students for the global workforce and foster critical thinking and cultural awareness.

Our standard syllabus contains much boilerplate information that must be disclosed to our students. So, I must carefully weave the global objectives into the existing language.

This module was very pleasant to watch through the different videos of experts helping us to have a wide view of an internalization of different themes about workplace, the links on resources were easy to access and I appreciate the space for us to share and participate trought the lesson.

Thank you for showing how easy it is to add or embed these concepts into the existing course work.  We use  standardized course objectives, but are free to change activities to meet class objectives.  With a small pivot I can take my students down a different path in patient care.

I learned how to incorporated an equitable learning environment that is realeted with the curriculum, culture and norms.

also, how to work with the global competence and improved my syllabus.

When it comes to developing assignments that internationalize competencies, I find it effective to create projects where students analyze data from manufacturing processes in both the United States and developing countries. I could ask them to compare efficiencies, cost advantages, and technology use between a high-tech industry in the U.S. and a lower-tech industry in a developing country.

I have learned the importance of making sure students possess skills such as timeliness and communication with others in the global economy.  There is a definite need for skills in technology to use communication tools.

To incorporate course planning for internationalization, I will first conduct a thorough review of the curriculum to identify areas where global perspectives can be integrated. I will then modify learning objectives, course materials, and assignments to reflect diverse cultural perspectives and global issues. Additionally, I will seek opportunities to incorporate technology for virtual exchanges, cross-cultural collaboration, and access to international resources. Moreover, I will prioritize creating an inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered to share their diverse perspectives and experiences. By intentionally planning for internationalization, I aim to provide students with a comprehensive and enriching educational experience that prepares them for success in an interconnected world.

I see the need to work around / with institutional as well as certifying organization parameters for course descriptions and learning outcomes effects many of us. Fortunately, I have the support I need from leadership to utilize the flexibility and freedom I do have with  my instruction and assessment.  The syllabi and rubric resources here are wonderful tools.

In this module I learned the value of internationalizing my course outcomes along with the course description and to best align those to industry standards for enhancing employability skills. Because the course I chose is a general broad course it was more challenging than anticipated to globalize outcomes due to the volume of content already stated in the outcomes.
