employers are looking for out of classroom experience that provides opportunities for critical thinking.
For Career Technical education (electricians, mechanics, plumbers, etc) some of the "service opportunities are limited because of legal aspects... having a student work on something they are not offcially qualified to work on. Brings up liability issues with both the university, and the hosting organization.
Does anyone know what 1100 organizations that have service learning, what the service learning is? What they do for service?

I hope to apply more service learning opportunities for my students.
While service learning offers immense value, designing and sustaining these projects can be challenging for educators and institutions. One major difficulty is building strong, reciprocal partnerships between schools and community organizations. Aligning educational goals with a community's real needs takes time, communication, and trust. Community partners may have limited staff or resources to support student involvement, while schools must ensure that the experience meets the academic and safety standards.
Some of the service learning our students have done has been very hard and challenging- which was a great teaching tool for our students to decide if this was a career choice for them or not.
Service learning offers educational benefits, but also is challenging. While it effectively fosters critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and civic engagement, it also requires long-term attention to sustain. Periodic dialogue with community leaders is essential.
I learned that while service learning has many benefits—like improving critical thinking, problem-solving, and community engagement—it also comes with challenges, such as building strong partnerships and ensuring long-term impact. Meeting with community leaders and understanding their needs is essential for creating meaningful and lasting service projects.
I plan to apply this by promoting ongoing communication between students, faculty, and community partners, and by encouraging reflection to help students grow both academically and personally. I also see the importance of showing institutions the long-term value of service learning to ensure continued support and participation.
"Students often raise the question: "Why do I have to learn this material?" The answer to this question can be seen through service learning." This is copy/pasted from the module, and how often as teachers have we heard this question from students?
Service learning can change the trajectory of lives: both the student's and the recipient. Despite the extra time required to develop service learning projects, it would be great if this type of education could come back to a higher priority.
I plan to incorporate service learning projects with middle school/junior high students, and I feel this information has provided an outline to establish successful projects. This course has outlined how important clear communication, with involvement from all participants, will be to the success of projects.
There is a big difference between a classroom-setting and the real world. Service Learning provides the students with real-world experience that also benefits others. When students see their work matters, they will likely become more motivated.
Reality base practice vs perfect world with no mistakes guidelines by the book
I am looking forward to developing and applying service-learning opportunities in my class.
Students should be able to see the value of service learning as in comes hand in hand with career development.
SL is a community building concept that when initiated properly will have great benefit to all invested parties. Student's for the growth that comes from using new skills in a way that directly benefits people, community members for the connection and resulting benefit of the SL project and educational institutions for the amity that it provides the communities they are involved with.
A reminder of how important communication and "Buy in" are.
Both community and 4-year colleges use service learning as an integral part of students.
