Universal Designs

How long have universal designs been used in schools. It is very interesting to me. I never considered certain universal designs accommodations, but when you think about it, they really are.

Students with Disabilities

Technology has provided so many new ways for students with and without disabilities to learn. The world is constantly changing and becoming easier for all to be successful.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities can succeed. If given the help they need, some or more successful than those without disabilities. They have the passion to trive because they are succeeding inspite of the odds they face. Embracing them is the best thing to do, the results can be very rewarding.

Accomadations

Accomadations seems like we would know what to do but it is a fine line between sayingthe right thing in your own mind to help someone and in reality, saying something that goes against the ADA. Education is key!

CM251

SEcond forum was an interesting read. Thought I was pretty comfortable with teh information until I failed the quiz the first time. Makes you think about what you really need to educate yourself on. Not only is this informational but important legal information. A must read.

Placement challenges

Given that we can never guarantee placement to a student, how do some of you ease the fear of students entering a new workforce for the first time?

Memory Loss Disability

We ran into an issue recently with a student who is a Veteran and suffered a head injury during combat in Afghanistan. The injury causes him to have very little to no short-term memory. He can't remember the name of someone he just met. How can an educational institution make accomodations for him, as the ability to remember what he learns in class or through studying just isn't there? What techniques can we use to assist him with learning the material and passing his classes?

The Accommodation Process

I am glad to learn that there are limits to accommodations and exactly how the accommodations are determined. No two people are exactly alike and I am glad that these accommodations are confirmed on a case by case basis.

"Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover"

The above quote is exactly what came to mind after reading this article!

Disability Disclosures

I feel that students with disabilities should make their disability known with their educational setting so that any avail. resources can be put to use in order to assure success can be accomplished.

Disabled Students

Learning is something that happens naturally, no matter how big or small & with that said, just because a student is disabled, doesn't mean they don't possess the capabilities to learn and be successful in their own right.

Reflection

Our role will always be to provide information and allow students to make an informed decision.

Reflection

Do you think ADD/ADHD is more common than we think?

question

do our students have to provide proof of learning disability in order to receive more time on tests?

Substitute / Part Time

As a substitute, I really struggled with the "What Do I say" section. I am also a nurse and recognize the sensitivity that comes with politically correctness and ensuring absolute sensitivity that it is difficult for me to feel clear on what is okay to say and what is not okay to say. I believe in encouraging students but also believe in an upfront approach to difficulty. This concept ought to also incorporate some of the integrity, honesty, and real representation of school expectations and program assignments. There is also the part of me that wants to see everyone succeed. Is there an easier way to digest this material given my limited role with it and given my tendency towards nursing empathy? Thanks!
