Remembering Names

There is some advice on drawing out quiet or shy students in some of the discussions. My problem is it is difficult for me to remember all of my students' names, so I am less likely able to call on the shy ones who don't stand out. I see the Harvard videos the adult students have name cards in front of them, has anyone else used this successfully? Any other suggestions on how you remember the names of the quiet students?

attitude

I have a few students that have had a rough up bringing, and they get attitude when they are asked questions. sometime it is hard to hold composure when they are rude.

every week i enter the classroom and tell the students that i am bored with the seating, i make them change every time we take a test and each student gets a different version of the test.

Organization

Being organized sets an example.

SHOUTING

Some instructors think if they raise and lower their voice that they can keep everyones attention. This only scares me while I am trying to concentrate.

A good rapport and letting students know about their ethical responsibilities can reduce cheatiing.

Motivate to be more prepared by using them as examples.

To Wear a university emblem

I believe it is in poor taste to display another university's emblem (whether shirt or computer bag)while teaching at a different university. Are there rules about this?

cheating online

I have had several spouses and family members take on line courses at the same time and submit similar work. They end up getting similar grades. I really hate that they may be losing out but?

OVERBEARING

I have students who are always typing a comment in the online chat room. Half of the time it is not relevant to the classroom discussion. I am trying to read all posts, answer them, look at my notes, run the computer and review items in the book. I have tried redirecting this student every class. I also set aside time to review the class expectations again noting the request to stay on topic. Your thoughts?

explaining couse

Stress

We have many stressors in our daily lives. Since we cannot eliminate certain stressors it is important that we learn how to manage stress.

Computerized Gradebook

I have been teaching for over 10 years and always figured out my grades using a calculator! A few years ago, someone shared ideas with me about a software program they use that was very user friendly. What a difference in time savings! I would be lost without it now. If you do not yet use a computer program of some kind to manage your grades/classes, start to look for one. You will be glad you did!

Time Management and Street

I am a firm believer of setting daily goals and writing a to-do list. If we do this, we will be less stressed and be better managers of our time.

Angry frustration based students

I have many students in my institution who get angry because they do not understand. Their anger stems from technology rather than course content. I noticed that they never try to solve the issue, they vent or blame something until someone else does it for them. This behavior is detrimental to their future success. Does anyone have any stratgies to combat this behavior?
