Room for Error

In my classes I open the floor for my students to see, know and understand that I am not perfect. I may not pronounce every word correctly or may have spoken incorrectly. I allow my students to correct me, or even pronounce the word that I may have issues with. I find that this keeps their minds on the topics and engaged in helping me with the lecture. As we all know we have one or two students in the class, "who feels" they know it all, so I call on them to help assist. At the same time, I show the students who may be weak in speaking skills, or reading skills that its okay to be shy, or not perfect, but you have to do your best and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Student who allows another student to cheat off of them

I had two students that became friends. Both worked besides going to school. I gave a weekend homework assignment to the class due on Monday. When I collected the homework and was reading it to grade it I found that I had read that exact essay answer earlier. So i looked thru the pile of papers and i found it was the two girls mentioned above. I put them side by side and went word for word and found that there was a 3 word difference in the entire assignment. Upon conclusion of the class i asked the two girls to meet with me tomorrow before class. I set a time and they agreed. My gut feeling was to give them both zeros, speak to them on the reason cheating is not the way to go but I wanted to discuss this with the Dean. He said I was right. Also this event now prevented either of the girls from becoming a Student Ambassador. They never cheated again.

Managing Student Behavior

During the first day and also first week of class, I like to place them in groups and see who is willing to step up to be captain or who hides. This allows me and the fellow classmates to see who can lead the team and who is shy, or just plain lazy.

Challenging Students

When I am dealing with a student who is challenging either me as an instructor or the information given, I give them the assignment to prove me wrong or help me to see their point of view. When giving their opinion/point of view it can not be just "hear say" they must provide the research along with their claim or the must remain quiet.

At times it just takes a shift in focus to cope with stress

teaching styles

Is it possible to have all of the mentioned learning styles?

discipline

How is a student handled when he tries to correct a teacher?

First day of class

Last week I taught my very first ever class. I have a pretty large class 31 students and my original plan was to go over course documents with a Q & A period and then move right into course content. This plan was a little side tracked by missing textbooks for the entire class and I lost nearly an hour of lecture time. I tried to remain positive and let my students know that by being flexible and creative we can as a collective group still get everything accomplished. That almost happened but I still ended up with an entire chapter that did not get lectured on. I adjusted my course content schedule to the benefit of the students in this case but am now worried that they will always expect adjustments that give them more time to complete a task and not require some degree of self study. Should I have done this differently?

Proactive Prologue

Beginning each class with a brief, positive, student-oriented prologue may make the critical difference in student behavior. The trials of the day may have students jangled, angry, upset. Begin class on a positive, supportive note and it will make a difference.

Multiple, Simultaneous Problems

Has anyone ever experienced a classroom that was filled with multiple disruptions within the same time period? This would probably be a nightmare scenario to deal with; however, I wonder if the lessons learned throughout this module could help diffuse the situation. As we were taught, we must be proactive with the discipline when it comes to one problem student, but what if you have several of them in the same class? At this point, should you stop the entire class and speak to them as a group or individually. Worst case scenario, you are forced to finish the class early because you simply can't handle the stress from being a "parent" instead of the "teacher."

Remembering Names

I will be teaching my first course. I have trouble remembering names. In a large class, what is a good way to imprint students names in my memory?

Stress

When my students do not turn their homework in on time stress me out. Because I have to go back and make another exam for the student to take.

Exams

It is good to have a tragedy for test-taking. I like to do multiple choice and true and false and maybe a minimum of 20 questions that make it easier to grade.
