time and stress management

I suspect that stress is not only controllable as it develops if/when we are able to recognize the symptoms, and we can. I feel that stress is reversable when we take charge. one can stop stressing by using relaxation, meditation. and looking at the positive as opposed to the negative in any and all situations and scenarios. such as running a tight ship,(meaning) establish classroom rules and priorities and by allowing the students comply to our protocol because they want to. the class will run more smoothly and stress will disapear.

Challenging students

Some "challenging" students will like to challenge their instructor. Whether the student is testing the instructors knowledge or their classroom behavior is simply to much to deal with. How can this situation be handled if that (one) student takes it upon themselves to involve other students in their negative classroom behavior? So instead of having one challenging student, you now have five?

Class preparation

I think that class preparation begins with reading in detail to your students the course syllabus. That way students will have a clear explantion as to what will be expected from them. In this case is it better to be hands on (demonstrate) or simply reading the material would be suffice?

Balancing and including students

So with 1 of my classes I have a student that needs a lot of attention and a student that tends to be inattentive. Should I call on the help of the inattentive to help the student with the most needs, or how should I best approach that situation?

Filling in for another instructor

I am a new instructor and have had to start teaching for this term right after the midterm. Now the final exam is approaching and I see some concerning trends from when I started teaching and performance of students prior to me teaching. In this case what is the most objective way to assess a student's final evaluation in this situation? strictly work from documented grades?

Making Mistakes

I've taught dozens of courses to thousands of students at three different law schools. I still make mistakes in every single class. There was a good piece of advice in this module: use humor. I try to show my students that mistakes aren't the end of the world, and if you can laugh at yourself for a silly mistake, it allows you to move forward and make progress.

Class Management

Because I foster an interactive learning environment, sometimes the class will break down with many people talking at once. There is a fine line between active, enthusiastic exchange of opinions and chaos. When I observe that communication has broken down into chaos, I call for complete silence and try to direct the discussion in a more orderly fashion.

Ice Breaker

I have an idea for an ice breaker to start the teamwork process. On the 1st day, I would pass out a handout with 5 questions. They have to find a person to work with on these 5 questions. The questions would be about getting to know the other person. Once they have asked each other the questions like their name, where they were born, etc, etc. Then their partner has to tell the class what they learned about their partmer. What do you think of this ice breaker idea?

Use-it-Wisely Cards

This is another ill-conceived suggestion. Don't we want our students to participate, and indeed, have all of their questions answered? For every student who asks a question, there are several more that want to know the answer but are afraid to speak up.

Shaming Students

One of the videos advocated shaming employees (in our case, students) to manipulate their behavior. This suggestion is reprehensible. I don't care if it brings about results; shaming another human being is never a good thing, period. The persons who should be ashamed are the lecturer in the video and the people at this institution who allowed this nonsense to be included in the curriculum.

ED110,time and stress management for instructors

to me, my logic seems to apply to the first quiz. I would only add that personalities have not been discussed or even mentioned. I think everyones logic has to do with their individual personalities as they relate to the subject. what is important or logical to one may not belogical to another.

encouraging students to work to their full potential

Any suggestions on how to direct students that do not apply themselves to learn or to participate in class specially when you notice that this student has the potential to succeed.

Calendars

A good calendar system is key to a good todo list

Stress

I agree with the module's contention that exercise is a good way to deal with stress. Sometimes I make excuses and claim I don't have enough time to exercise, but ultimately, I end up more frustrated, stressed, and unhappy than if I had just exercised. More time is wasted feeling sorry for myself than anything. I use the P90X dvd's, and have found that even doing half the workout is a great stress reliever!

Not enough time in the day!

Generally, I get stressed in regards to the number of tasks that need to be completed every day - the schedule is relentless! I plan to use some of the suggestions in regards to faster classroom preparation to assist in making more time every day!

Organization

I currently teach three classes, and I don't have the benefit of having an office at the school. I've found that creating different sections within the bag I carry to school every day helps me stay organized, as well as keeping papers organized and grouped. This can be challenging, but it forces me to remain organized!

To Do List

I've found that including even simple things on my to do lists... "check email", etc. give me a sense of accomplishment. I then feel motivated to continue completing items and crossing them off.

late assignments

I try to stick to the syllabus and its statements of the rules for late assignments, but I also take into account the individuals personal issues as they are brought to my attention.

Mistakes

As a instructors your personal life should be separate from class discussion, unless you are trying to make a vital point to help the student in some way. Keeping it professional and on target of the content helps keep the students focused and not having them drift away.

Cheating

Student cheating should not be tolerate at all. He/ she will be cheating themself from the education they are suppose to be gaining. Some type of disciplinary act should be taken.
