Ready to quit students

With this type of student, should I pull them aside and question what the problem is, or direct them to the school administration?

Class manager

Should I revisit class requirments, as the course progress? Or is the initial orientation enough?

Syllabus

I work in a veterinary tech program and each of our instructors is in charge of a particular term of the program (ex. Term 1, Term 2, etc). As the vet in the program I am not in charge of a single term but step into portions of courses for each term. As such, I will typically only lecture/hold lab for 1 or 2 periods at a time and then not be back for a week or month depending on the term. As such I do not have a syllabus to give the students. What I typically do is put "objectives" at the start of my powerpoints so bullet point for them the reason we are going through the material we cover. And, to let them know what they will be held accountable for. Would you recommend I create a mini syllabus for these individual topics? Or, maybe just a mini syllabus or handout that I give to the first term class when I teach the first time to explain to them how I typically do things and how to get help when needed? Thanks for the input.

Stress from Student Evals

We get evaluated from students semi-yearly, not the administrators. If they had a bad day, got a 96% on a test not a 100%, felt irritated, they will get even & throw you under the bus.

Homework

From reading "collect homework & redistribute" not allowed at our career college? Anyother ideas except for scantron?

Moving A lLecture Direction

I believe a great instructor/lecturer shoudl have the ability to recognize when the students intereste is peaked on a certain aspect or tangent of a structured lecture. When the lecturer recognizes this interest it is in the best interests of the students to explore that subject matter and discuss, lecture,q&a until the students questions are answered and they fully understand the subject matter.

My Stress

I have learned to keep my stress levels down. It took a long time but I can do it.

Streamlining Time

Any and all strategies to streamline time is welcome. There is so much to do in such little time.

Stress

Important topic. We can't escape stress. It is everywhere we go. It's true some stress is good for us.

managing yourself

I have students that very in age group from 18 to 60. I have to be careful not to loose my temper or my patience, some of the more mature students can test your patience more than the younger students. I believe i have a good rapport with all of my students. The key for me is patience ,that keeps me from losing my temper.

What if a student misses the day of a test?

I feel that if a student calls the day of the test and lets the instructor know why they are missing the test, then I give them till the next class period, but if they do not call or give any explaination, then they receive a 0

Managing the classroom

When managing a classroom, I believe it is good idea to address questions right away because it provides interest and teaching moments especially with adult learners.

You typically wear two hats.

While doing this, I found that I am always wearing two hats so to speak. I am typically a guide personality, but will switch to buddy outside a lecture setting. The real challenge is not letting yourself slip into the buddy mode in the classroom.

Sleeping in class

Is sleeping in class disruptive or is it a way to tell me I'm boring. I used to ask the student to meet me after class to understand their "lack" of motivation, yet just got the normal response of "studying all night" Now after that I was a "live by the rules guy", I let the student sleep it off, they are paying for it.

Ever Changing processes and technology

Change is good, but constant change is a stressor. this is especially true when in comes to learning new data systems, process or procedures. For someone who works with it daily it is second nature, but for those who use it intermittently it can be challenging to get on board with the process. when the wheel of change never stops turning you can never feel caught up.

Setting Time Boundries with Students

Therapist have been using this technique for years yet we often forget that it can be a useful tool in education. By helping the student for pre set amount of time you can set the expectations for them as to what the session will accomplish and also helps them understand up front that you will be teaching them not doing something for them. It keeps the personal responsibility in thier lap. This is especially true in Career Services where we are teaching the students to fish every day, not feeding them a fish fry dinner.

Arriving Late to Class

As a part time instructor I am in a clinic setting. Should students get marked down if they arrive late to clinic?

Stress Reduction

I am a strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer and in my opinion there is no better way to manage stress than exercise and "meditation"---whatever meditation is to you, be it Church, books, journaling, praying, silence etc. These two things combined make you literally feel better physically, emotionally, and spiritually due to the physiological and mental benefits of exertion and mental channeling on the right things that matter in life. Sweat is literally stress leaving my body and I couldn't do what I do without yoga, pilates, boxing, basketball, weights, cardio etc. There is a euphoria of calmness, comfort, control, content, and happiness after every single workout!

Stress

I get stressed out with the flow of communication at my company! My superiors manage by e-mail, and I often experience non-communicated expectations! No accountability on their end, only mine! Like the process of securing externships, I was never taught how supervisors do this, where documents are, what timelines should look like etc. I have tried many ways to address this problem but it has to do with the powers above me, so I feel helpless sometimes and I just "figure it out". But I am actually a perfectionist, and I even read the instructions of a simple tool, so unclear procedures stress me out! How do I handle this? Chip

Organization

I have an office that is small, and I share with 3 other instructors! We have cabinets and drawers to try to keep our office supplies, papers, and books out of immediate sight in effort to keep from looking cluttered. However, we still feel like our office is overstocked, so we are looking for ideas to better utilize a small space? Perception is critical in the eyes of our supervisors and students, so any suggestions would help! Chip
