Lab

Lecture and hands on are what the student's respond to.

Lecture

I like to call on various students during lecture in order to keep everyone engaged.

Attention spans

To me one of the most important parts of classroom management involves the instructor paying attention to the students and realizing when a lecture, lab, handout or something similiar is ineffective. Keeping adult students attention is the most important part of efectively teaching in my opinion.

First impressions

For me meeting a class for the first time is probably the most important day in the term. It is important to set the tone for the class, as well as the expectations, and requirements. I like to set a relaxed environment with an emphasis on consequences, both good and bad, that reflects my personal attitude of hard work with a smile.

Preparation

I try to make it a point to always be in the classroom before the first student arrives. I find that if I am running late the first part of the class will be almost a total wash than if I had prepared for it. If I am late I will be rushed to get the classroom laid out for lecture, as well as lab activities. By being early I allow myself plenty of time to prepare myself and my classroom for the day.

Night Students and Motivation

One of the hardest challenges I have faced is helping students who work full time during the day, find the motivation needed to stay on task and focus at night. One of the best motivational tools I have found so far is to try and focus on the long term impacts of learning and understanding the course material. I always try to relate to the students that the core skills they learn in the classroom have daily relevance in their chosen career field. I find that if I help the students focus on how a subject will apply to them in the field they generally rub the sleep from their eyes and sit a little straighter in their chairs to take my lecture in.

learning groups control

Learning groups for lab work, works well as long as the groups remain small. A maximum of three people per group works well in our industry. It is important to emphasis that each student must perform all required tasks. I find that quizzing each group member verbally while the learning teams are performing help to evaluate the effectiveness of the team performance. Team learning groups based on lecture or additional self study is more difficult because the atmosphere is more relaxed. Giving each team a question to answer based on the lecture seam to work because it gives the team a goal.

Using 3x5 cards

I like the idea of using 3x5 cards. I can insert cards that remind me that if it has been more than 10 minutes to change it up or take a break.

Analytical Thinking

I personally feel that analitical thinking has more to do with knowledge of the particuler subject matter, IE: Mechanical, administrative or Mathmatical, and hands on experience rather than generl subject matter. it's extremely difficult if not impossible to apply analitical thought process to a subject that one does not understand the ground rules for the subject at hand.

keeping the students attention

sometimes I find it hard to keep the attention of my students during lecture
