The Pygmalion Effect

Students need motivation, that goes without saying. But as facilitators we need to make sure that students are ready for the challenge and to "prime" the student with a message like "Today is going to be exciting" That excitement will translate into success.

Simulation is key

I teach recording arts and the best way for students to understand the rhythm and work flow of a studio is to be in one. I usually assign different roles to students and give them a dead line for a certain amount of work, this way students can see and understand the roll that they wil fill once they are done wit school.

Seating.

The "U" to me is the best seating arrangement, students can see each other while asking a question, discussions are very easy to have and maintain because students are not constantly having to look over their shoulders.

keeping to a lesson

When you have holidays or long weekends and say you normally have 5 days to cover a subject now you have 4. What's the best way to get that information into you class without boring your students?

Formative and summative evaluations are the preferred methods used in our college. the information gained here validates what we are doing

questioning as a technique

in the past i have used questioning to first get a feel of where the class is but today i have further understanding and intend to use this skill more in my classrooms

lecture

Is it ok to sit or should one stand when giving a lecture. I am very tall 6'5" Iam taller than most student when I sit on a stoll I have in the back of the class. I do move from the back to the front of the class while lecturing.

learning styles

I find this information on the effects of learning styles very useful to help my students aquire new knowledge and will certainly operationalize in my classes.

groups

you need to be a team player no one person knows eveything. You will need help from someone else at some point.

New Instructor

I'm a new instructor with no formal training from a technical institution. All of my training came from OJT and industry based classes. I know the area of study but the technical verbal I'm lacking. Being an instructor now I feel I have to be able to convey the message of study using the proper language. I just want to be a valuable asset to my students.

ED 101

I am starting as a new instructor at a trade school. I just finished the ED 101 course and found a lot of the material very helpful and will put it to use. I am a younger teacher and may have students in my class that are much older than me. I'm worried that they won't take me seriously even though I know the subject matter very well and my knowledge in the industry will help them succeed. Any thoughts would be helpful!

Advice for "one-shot" library instruction sessions

I'm a new academic librarian, and part of my job involves doing instruction sessions on the topics of research, library resources, and APA style. These presentations usually only last about an hour. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to cram a lot of information on sometimes several different subjects into a single presentation and still engage the students so they retain the information?

Making lectures interesting
