Classroom Issues

I teach at a fast paced college that works in 6 week terms. I can teach up to 4 classes each term, and I often am in a different room for each class (while other instructors also use those same 4 rooms). How are some ways to accomplish similar results to the tips that are recommended in this lesson?

Gatekeeper

One of the things that I have always discussed with other educators is my view of myself as the gatekeeper to knowledge, rather than the teacher. Modern technology provides information virtually instantaneously, and thus an instructor cannot be the person who gives the knowledge to the student. They can, however, help to lead the student to where the information is, and how to apply that knowledge to everyday situations.

Getting to know your students learning styles

Teaching to the different learning styles in the class room can sometimes be challenging so I like to ask my students what type of learners they happen to be ,this give me an idea of the type of learners I have in class .

Evaluating the teacher

I can't imagine a more effective self evaluation technique than summative tests given to the students. I think it measures teaching technique even more than student progress.

Inviting questions

One of the best ways to prepare for a lecture is to invite questions. This insures that the teacher is confident in the subject matter being presented

Directing testing types

It is critical to design test that measures the student's knowledge and that is pertinent to the class content. Obviously, essay tests are of little value in math courses.

Learning styles

It is a challenge to direct lectures, etc. to 30 different learning styles.

Assessment

Using a variety of assessment tools works well within a diverse classroom.

CAT

Using such tools keeps the students actively participating in class.

Student Participation

Getting students involved is just as important as presenting them with new material.

Learning Diversity

It is important to survey the class and understand what learning styles you are dealing with to properly prepare for efficient delivery of material.
