The biggest thing to get out of this tutorial is the fact that someone is always watching you and listening, because you are the example for them.

I have found that my knowledge of pop culture helps me to break down barriers and form relationships with my students. I use it to engage all of my students, and also to bridge the age and experience gaps. While not every person in class gets all of my references (I utilize both current and classic pop culture references), I am assured that some of the students will get some of the references. I have used this to get some students out of their shells, and to join in discussions that they may have otherwise avoided.

I have had some specific difficulty in helping students that have disabilities, especially because of one of the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As an instructor, we are not allowed to approach a student with a disability to ask if there are any ways we can accommodate. We have to wait for them to come to us. I have one student in particular who had difficulties in completing computer work (and completing certification tests)because she had suffered a stroke and had almost no use of her left arm. The only thing we could do in our department was… >>>

This section really makes sense if utilized in setting up a class. If the first thing that a student sees when they walk into a room are the targets for the day (along with any equations, etc.), this will trigger the Primacy method, At the end of the class, reviewing all of these areas will also then trigger the Recency method. I teach at a fast paced college that works in 6 week terms. I can teach up to 4 classes each term, and I often am in a different room for each class (while other instructors also use those same 4 rooms). How are some ways to accomplish similar results to the tips that are recommended in this lesson?

One of the things that I have always discussed with other educators is my view of myself as the gatekeeper to knowledge, rather than the teacher. Modern technology provides information virtually instantaneously, and thus an instructor cannot be the person who gives the knowledge to the student. They can, however, help to lead the student to where the information is, and how to apply that knowledge to everyday situations.

How do you approach the situation that occurs when students compare you to other instructors: "Mr. Soandso never had us do this...", especially if that instructor has an excellent reptutation with a lot of students?
A lot of instructors that I know have used different versions of the same test, often with the questions in a different order. They want the students to take the same test, but eliminate the situation where a student feels they can take advantage. It keeps the "honest students honest" because they know that it is useless to look at another's paper.

What happens when there are multiple students that are of the center stage category? Do they often conflict with each other, or work off of each other in their attempts to enjoy the limelight?

As a new instructor coming into an established program, how do I keep the students from looking at me as an outsider?
