How to motivate students who think they know everything?

Some students come into our courses with a good amount of real world experience. At times, I find these particular students hard to motivate because they feel that they know the subject already and only in class to get credit. Any suggestions?

How do I keep fact based lectures from being boring?

My classes are usually a lot of funand interactive, but I have some subjects that are completely theory based. I have a hard time making those days interactive. The subject matter is just so boring! Anyone have any ideashowto make anatomy, electricity, and skin diseases fun?

New Instructor, concerns about age difference.

I am a new instructor and have some concerns regarding how my age will affect me when it comes to teaching the student's. I don't want older studenst to think I am not "experienced", as I don't want the younger students to think I'm here to "party". I know I will enjoy teaching, but I still have this concern. Any tips?

Attendance issues

I teach a 4 hour class block and have trouble with students coming significantly late or leaving significantly early. What is the best way to handle this, especially when giving tests & quizzes? I don't feel it's fair to those who show up on time to drag tests out over the entire 4 hours, but I don't want to give out a bunch of zeroes either.

Adjusting sooner

I usually find the proper lecture format to fit specific student learning styles within the first quarter of the course, but this course will help me to find that connection sooner in the semester. By adjusting to the students sooner, I can relay more information.

First day importance

I have always felt strongly about creating a student-friendly atmosphere immediately on the first day of class. This course has not only reinforced my notion, but has taught me that the first day of class is even more important than I had originally thought. The first day can dictate the tone (for better or worse) for the rest of the semester.

Planning for the unexpected

There is a wide array of student backgrounds and learning styles. Proper planning and preparation allows me to explain course information smoothly and handle many surprises without losing my direction or composure.

Challenges of varying student age

A wide range in age within a single classroom often seems daunting. The differences in learning styles and technological manipulation can create a lapse in a group's ability to retain information and keep up with the course. However, a strong professional image and the use of several different instructional styles can act as the glue to hold together an entire classroom, regardless of age.

Online learning

So after reading this portion i get the impression that most of the learning that happens in an online course like this one is mostly written, with some visual learning as well. But what happens to us who are visual learners, or worst, Kinesthetic learners ? how do we make this online system work for us ?

Classroom review

I like to review the days topic to see how much they have retained. I do this by involving the students in questions and answer sessions, this seems to work quite wll as far as retention goes.
