Using a Journal for Classroom Management

As an experienced instructor teaching a completely new subject to adults, I feel that keeping an open mind in the classroom is very important. I taught high school career and work experience to teenagers for the last thirteen years until recently when I accepted an offer to teach in a vocational school for adults. When I retired from public education I trained as a jeweler with an accredited school in my city. I have continued making jewelry, but now have to learn many of the new projects being taught and some of the same ones that I learned all… >>>

Learning Styles Myth

I was chocked by this myth.  I am a program coordinator at my school and i have done your course on Learning Styles (which i don't remember the number) to now learn it's complitely wrong!  I will have to readress this "learning" with my teachers.

Managing the adult class

Adult student Instructor need to now which type and style he /she is .

The best and preferred style is the guide instructor.

Use the I and not use  you.

Setting structure in the classroom

Nobody likes change,  but in the medical world change is inevitable. Bringing real life examples into the classroom paints a vivid picture to all of the students of how fast things happen in the field. Following through with the rules helps students know we come to be their instructor and mentors not a friend. Practicing teach back during lectures and randoms quizes keeps them engaed and motivated to pay attention.

enjoyed this training

I enjoyed the reading for the course. I feel that the content from this course will help me as an instructor.

Managing the Classroom

Remember, we need to keep our class intrested in the lecture topic.  One of the best ways is to spend some of the class time, and physically get the students up and moving aroud.  While at the same time teaching them about today's lesson.

Having Faith in People

I teach communication courses and find, despite the challenges of helping others learn and get excited, that believing people will succeed--having faith in them--makes it easier to overcome obstacles and disappointments. I always look at the students who inspire me to help them learn as motivators. They help me overcome disenchantment with other students who don't show similar enthusiasm for the courses I teach.

Blocking out time in my schedule to do new things and enjoy life; using SimpleNote to write down things

So, I've committed to these steps:

  • Writing down one good thing that happened to me every day in SimpleNote
  • Writing down at least one thing I'm grateful for every day.
  • Blocking out 30 minutes of walking every weekday morning
  • Planning on visiting one new place every Saturday
  • Mediating for 15 minutes before bed every night
  • Joining a Toastmaster group

ED104 Training

ED104 is a great training course for someone like me who have many years of work experience but new as an instructor. It shows me methods and techniques for managing students and class acitvities. I learnt the strategies to effectively deal with unfocused and challenging students, and also to be a good instructor.

Thanks!

Class management strategies

I found this module helpful.  This can also be applied in other settings.

Stress

I think this course has a few tools to use to reduce stress such as sharing your stress, doing exercise, breathing, stretching for 5 minutes and getting enough sleep. There are ways to reduce stress in the work and make our lives easier to be more productive.

thanks

thanks

ED 104

There were several aspects of this course that were new to me but also a good reminder to incorporate some of the items I already knew

My personal teaching experience.

I have learned over my short teaching career that by sharing my personal and professional experience regarding the current teaching subject, students tend to become more involved and increase their classroom participation. The student also increases their retention and understanding of the topic at hand. Therefore, I will continue to share my stories of the teching subject with my students.

Director Involvement is Key!

I know that when I am able to be more present in the classroom that the rapport I build with the students and instructors grows tremendously, thus making everything else work smoothly!

Action Plan

I intend to share the information on MANAGEMENT STYLES with my Academic Director so we can review the information with our Professors during our next faculty meeting. The goal is to help them to evaluate their classroom managment styles and become more of "Guiding"instead of Controlling.
